maybe with Hollywood closing he will look for employment as a fortune teller or maybe become the next Nostradamus? I don't think so!! I don't think I have ever heard him make a statement about a race as it is unfolding that hasn't made him look like a complete ass. I haven't bet a race there all meet and still know that speed has been strong in the turf sprints and closers dominant in the turf routes, regardless of the pace. so when he said after the first quarter of the 1 1/2 mile Hollywood turf cup that lucayan would have to be a monster to win from last into the slow pace, I knew I was home free!! he is a black cat Jonah who has no clue!!

stauffer strikes again with boyett in the 8th. listen to the call. as soon as he says boyett is running a huge one, he went from three in front and coasting to getting swallowed up by the chalk. that's whjat I get for trying to buck the track bias. I had them both but boyett would have been much better.

"The derby may run through the jungle"...is he serious about shared belief? Lord, its freaking 6 months away!!! Violence was the next "superstar" last year out of this race and what did he do?. I don't want to start any nonsense but ANY AND ALL of these phony grade 1 2 year old races mean zilch no matter what track.

Am I missing something? "The derby may run through the jungle" WTF does that mean? One thing about him is he has to make a freaking dramatic mini-series out of every race. Maybe Chamberlain will move back to Houston and Stauffer can follow in Mike Wrona's footsteps and become the regular announcer at Turf Paradise?

shared belief ran a great race and was clearly best in what I think WAS a solid field. but I agree. the drama is ridiculous with this guy sometimes, and the derby is 5 months away.

Wiz, you are right he is a nice little horse. Maybe Vic got caught up in the moment since it was the last grade 1/cash call at HP . George , Jim Rome is the owner of the horse and his radio show is referred to as "the jungle". Plenty time between now and may. Lets see how he runs on dirt at SA.

im going on record right now as saying beware of the runner up. I played him yesterday at a giant price and even though he was clearly no match for the winner yesterday, a lot can change in five months.i didn't see his first two races, but doubt they matter much in the scheme of things. when he ran second to bafferts horse in the maiden race, everyone made a big deal about the trouble tap it rich had. yes he had trouble, but if you watch, candy boy never switched leads in the stretch and still finished with plenty of run. then he destroyed a maiden field in average time time at best, but it wasn't a fast track. he has run on all three surfaces now and done his best on dirt. he is coming into his own and has good connections. I have no problem with the way gary rode him yesterday, although some will say he moved to early. id rather move to early then too late any day of the week. I think they knew what they had and just wanted to get a clean trip in a big field and give him a fair shot to win it he was just second best, but as I said, a lot can change in 5 months. shared bekief might have matured sooner and come back to the field by then. you never know. im going to make a comparison, and I know some will call me a . but candy boy reminds me a little of alysheba, a favorite of mine, when he ran in the futurity. he wasn't thought all that highly of yet either and made an early move and then got tired late. but he had no problem with the distance later and I think this guy may turn out being the same. if he is half the horse alyusheba was im sure they will be happy.

would you like to make a side bet on that ev? I actually like honor code, but I will take the 1-2 finishers in the futurity yesterday against your two with no hesitation. I think that race yesterday will turn out to be a very strong race race. how about whoever finishes best of the four in the derby wins? that way you have two shots and so do I. if none of them make it to the race then its a push. if I win you have to go to Belmont wearing an "I love bob baffert" posterboard all day!! if you win I will vote for Hillary in 2016?

Sorry Wiz. I wouldn't make a Derby bet now. I dislike Hollendorfer far more than Baffert BTW. He's your kind of trainer - all about $ but doesn't care about horses if they don't win. He also runs sore horses and pumps them with w/e is needed to get them thru a race. Yes Wiz - I know you think that's "the game". I don't. Back to these horses - they are still growing. I don't put much stock in 2 yr old races. I like to see the FL preps.

I re-watcjhed the race and Vic's call was very good. It was professional - unlike Denman's calls of Zenyatta's races and his other personal favorites. Vic got nothing but praise in the media! He's always been better than Denman - at least one can understand him!
You'll have to sprout wings (the mnost stupid expression ever and totally overused!) to get me to agree with you So we'll have to agree to disagree.

as always. nothing new. I never said there was anything he did wrong. what I said was he is a Jonah. a jinx. a black cat!! everytime he opens his mouth, something bad happens to the horse he is hyping up. he isn't a bad announcer though and does do a good job of describing the race, unlike the feeble old tool in new York who seems lost at most points during the race. at least "youi'll have to sprout wings" doesn't have to be yelled at a million decibels to get his point across. vic AND the tool in new York seem to think the only way to add excitement to a call or make it more interesting is to yell at the end of it.
btw, how much sidework does vic or the tool get for special race days, television, or movie roles? denmen is who they come to when they want the voice of racing. the tool is who they go to when they want the voice of a blabbering, half witted buffoon.

geeesh wiz - perhaps a bit harsh? people disagree - it's nbd - i like vic - also think he's a better race caller than denman, whom i dislike - but then he was run out of MD before he wound up in so cali lol (was in ny then but remember coming down, being at pimlico and asking - wth is that? he has improved a lot since those early days) BUT - that's my opinion - i have no need to bash the guy with name calling and insults - have met tom and must say he is an extremely personable and nice man
people get old - it's a fact (if they're lucky i guess) - at least tom resigned from the TC - denman should do the same with the BC - IF his contract is renewed - he is also OLD and stale and misses calls too - 'tis time for new blood - new voices
denman yells a lot too - especially when his pals are in the running - the "un-be-liev-a bull" was ear shattering as was the strwetch call when zen was beaten by blame - perhaps the most u nprofessional big race call ever btw! but again - nbd - the horses are the show, not the caller - it's why binocs are "handy"
now - what do you mean about "they come to trevor" - huh? what movies has he been in - etc. who declared him the "voice of racing"? many before him he could have learned from were mucho better
would love to see Peter Berry get the BC contract!

Durkin was the original Breeders' Cup caller and had the job for more than 20 years.
The ONLY reason that Durkin left the Breeders' Cup back in 2006 was because ESPN (ABC) got the television contract. Durkin was still under contract with NBC., doing the Triple Crown races.
His contract with NBC, which he had from 1984 through 2010, didn't allow him to work for any other network.
However, one thing that Denman has over Durkin is that Denma was a race caller in an episode of The Simpsons!!!

among others. that adds to his list as I said. laugh at the simpsons if you want, but it has been on tv for over 20 years and is one of the most successful programs of all time. durkin is done. he even said it himself when he stopped doing the tc races. HE said it. he didn't have the passion or the voice to do it anymore. but I guess that doesn't mean anything either, right georgie? even when others ADMIT to something, you seem to not be able to accept it or acknowledge that it is true.........
Admin Note: Please leave politics off racing threads

Durkin did not say he didnt have the passion or the voice. I think unless you do the job, you can't understand the pressure. Tom was having anxiety issues. Because he's a pro. "What began with a flush of panic in 1987 as Ferdinand and Alysheba dueled to a photo finish in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, grew steadily into a debilitating anxiety by 2005. Though he will continue to call other races, his decision to leave the Triple Crown is no small loss, for Durkin’s mellifluous baritone and vivid narration had, in real time, provided the soundtrack for the history of modern thoroughbred racing. He also called the first 22 runnings of the Breeders’ Cup for NBC. “It’s something I have dealt with a long, long time and the cumulative effect finally got to me,” Durkin said Wednesday morning by telephone. “It’s like you’re getting hit on the head with a hammer, and you do everything you can to make it better — you take aspirin and put a bandage on it, but eventually you got to take your head out from beneath the hammer. Life is too short and precious.” Here's the full article. www.nytimes.com/2011/04/28/sports/28durkin.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0Wiz - You are being far too crticial and totally ignoring Tom's fantastic career. I think it's because peoplke disagree with you about Denman. He's in CA. Fim studios are in CA. He's not exactly a movie star LOL Durkin's voice is better - He's easier to listen to. Denman's monotone voice is annoying to listen too. That's my opinion. You disagree. Actually I liked when Keeneland had no callers! Dave Johnson to Durkin: “You are the unerasable audio history of a race with a 20-horse field,” Johnson said. Collmus: “We’re not robots,” I give Durkin credit for reaching a point in his life where he put his personal life ahead of his professional one. You are being nasty and cruel!
