RG, I too am picking one of Bob's horses in the Alabama..I LOVE FiftyShadesofHay & have followed her since her debut (plus she is a teddy bear of a horse so of course I am sprung)....I know she has a tall task ahead of her if she is going to beat Princess of Sylmar but hey...when ya got a favorite you stick with them and since I am not a bettor I stand to lose no money if she doesn't win.
GO FIFTY GO!!!

not mentioning any names of tracks or trainers here as I am not allowed to do that anymore, but I will say this. the Alabama this year may be the worst field in a 600k race I have ever seen. this is late in the 3 yr. old year and a grade 1 event, and outside of the two favorites you have no other filly who has ever beyered above 88. now I don't use beyers, but still, that is embarrassing. you have one that broke her mdn. in a claimer just 2 months ago and is still eligible for nw1x and another just barely past it who broke her mda. 2 1/2 months ago. and that may be who I actually like! not sure yet. but overall, once you get past the top two, this could be an overnight stakes race looking at the entries.

3 Fillies that would/should have been there are out - Midnight Lucky, Julia and perhaps Katie (doubtful though). It happens. You should be thrilled - Baffert's Fiftyhades has a great shot! I like her - nice filly.

Jon...you beat me to that point - can't do anything about injuries, and this year the 3-year old filly group has taken many hits.

LOL! Wiz, you're silly!
As far as Kuaui Katie...methinks her "vacation" will likely be a permanent transition into broodmare duty...she doesn't seem liek the monster she once seemed she would be. Julia?? Well cannot cmment on her...has she had any issues we know of that necessitated her "vacation"??
Midnight Lucky SHOULD have been there...I wish she was (then again it would be hard for me to pick against Fifty so I would have to pick them both). Midnight WILL be back I think...They say she'll run at 4 so we'll see....bone bruising just sucks....one of my friends just bought our Rainbow playsystem swingset and their 6yo daughter got ambitious (and a bit too brave) and launched herslef off the swing when it was at it's highest point and fractured her elbow in 2 places at the growth plate...the doc said the fractured healed up very nicely but now Savannah has leftover bone bruising and the Doc said that will likely take a bit longer to heal. I would imagine the same applies to youngster horses as well. Either way it sucks. When I fell down our stairs last year (literally one week after Hubby deployed) and shattered my wrist I had basically bones in there that looked like a kabob once they put the pins in to repair it but the bone bruising from the fall and the surgery hurt like Hell for weeks after the cast came off and pins came out. Then again it is pretty amazing when you look at it like an anatomy lesson. AmAZING what bones can do and how flexible they actually are...bone bruises sure hurt but it beats the alternative of fractures or flat out breaks.
It seems ALOT of divisions took a hit this year...what didvisions to we really have that are rock solid and steady and chock full of contenders? 3yo Fillies? Nope. 3yo colts? Maybe. Older fillies and mares? Not really. Older males...maybe. Maybe the spirnt division isn't bad. WHat about turf? Or Milers? This discussion has come up amongst a few of us attending the Longacre's Mile this year and while we always get TONS of nominations, I can't think of any truly rock solid milers off the top of my head right now...anyone? In past years when divisions where full to capacity was SO exciting. This year is exciting but nearly as much as year's past.
