oh my what a shocker. someone posts amd elite starts crying and wanting to be hateful and fight. maybe I should have labeled the post differently. something more along the lines of, "squantums says baffert wins Preakness but he is no elite1. no one is I am the greatest of all time at everything i do and the world revolves around me. class dismissed!". you are a sad case dude. maybe your mommy didn't love you enough as a child.

Well I for one am ELATED! I have LOVED this filly ever since the very beginning of her career and she is a nice filly who I think showed she may not be a "world beater" but she took it to them and beat them in their own back yard. Bob may not be Todd Pletcher and he may not run in NY or whatever but he is a good trainer who has put MANY of those favorites we have screamed for and bet on over the last MANY years in the winner's cicrcle and for that he deserves his accolades.
Wiz, I agree with you about Bob,...the guy gets alot of flack but the funny thing is we always seem to be watching his horses win so I can't fault the guy for that! He is a VERY nice guy too if I might say so myself...we visitied him on BC weekend and he knew how much I loved Coil and he gave me Coil's BC Saddlecloth as a gift. VERY nice man and alot more down to earth than the media makes him seem. He was funny, engaging and very cool...no to tmention he must have thanked my hubby a few times for his service in the Military and recent deployments. He picked Hubby's brain for about an hour asking all kinds of questions about his deployment and what it's like "over there" his concern and care and interest were NOT just meant for "TV' either...he was VERY VERY VERY nice! We met all the Baffert horses that day and visited at the barn for at least two hours! It was awesome! Then again I have always been a fan of his but after visiting with him and his horses, even more so.

wiz - no - It can re-direct towards Mikey! For those (like me! ) that missed it: Afleet did indeed pick FiftyShades! WTG Afleet! I'm not a Baffert fan. He has so many horses he must have lots of fans though! And he always has one "in the wings". She's a nice filly - I always thought that but am not sure she's "uop there" with Julia, Beholder, Midnight Lucky, Flashy Gray, even Kauai Katie but maybe. It will be fun to see how she develops. What was wrong with Emollient? I really hope Shooter got some good photos! From Pimlico's site: Fiftyshadesofhay Gets Up To Win Black-Eyed Susan Stakes BALTIMORE, 05-17-13– Karl Watson, Michael E. Pegram & Paul Weitman’s Fiftyshadesofhay closed with a rush to claim a narrow victory in the 89th running of the $500,000 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (G2) at Pimlico Race Course. Trained by Bob Baffert, the daughter of Pulpit rated off the pace under jockey Joel Rosario before launching an outside stretch run and reeling in Marathon Lady by a neck at the finish. Fiftyshadesofhay ran the 1 1/8-mile stakes for 3-year-old fillies in 1:52.73. Toasting, who pressed the pace under Javier Castellano, finished third. Emollient, the 4-5 favorite ridden by Mike Smith, had trouble leaving the starting gate and was never a serious factor during a sixth-place finish. Fiftyshadesofhay broke her maiden at Hollywood Park last year and won the San Ysabel (G3) at Santa Anita in January. She most recently finished third in the Santa Anita Oaks (G1) on April 6. Fiftyshadesofhay paid $6.60. BLACK-EYED SUSAN STAKES QUOTES Bob Baffert (trainer, Fiftyshadesofhay, winner)– “I wasn’t sure turning for home because I told Rosario that she usually runs 1-2-3, but ride her the way you feel you should ride her. Rosario sort of did his own thing today, but it was the right thing.” Joel Rosario (jockey, Joel Rosario, winner)– “It was kind of a perfect trip, but she was kind of slowing a little bit from the dirt in her face. I got her on the outside and she looked like she was really comfortable. Right when I went past the three-eighths pole before turning for home, she kind of got away from me a little bit. I was kind of worried about it, but she was able to get it back together and she kept going. Bob (Baffert) told me, ‘She’s just one-paced, so keep her going.’ So I think it was a little bit better to keep her on the outside. When I passed the sixteenth-pole I could see that the horse in front of me was backing up a little. That’s when I felt better. Steve Hobby (trainer, Marathon Lady, 2nd)– “She ran huge. She ran her tail off. She had a great trip. I don’t know what we could have done any different. Robby Albarado (jockey, Marathon Lady, 2nd)– “I had a lot of horse under me the entire race. Something must have happened to Mike’s (Smith) filly (Emollient) in the gate, because I thought she’d be up front. I found myself lying third and very comfortable at every point. I thought I had it won until right before the wire.” Javier Castellano (jockey, Toasting, 3rd)– “She was great today. They put the blinkers on her and she pulled me all the way. I’m happy with what she did against the best 3-year-olds in the country. She stepped up and showed us her class today.” Bill Mott (trainer, Emollient, 6th) “She had a pretty good stumble leaving the gate, which didn’t help. Obviously, she got back a little further and had to overcome that. It looked like to me she might have been fighting that racetrack. The main track may not be her best surface, so you might see her try the turf course next time.” Mike Smith (jockey, Emollient, 6th)– “She stumbled out of the gate really bad, and she caught her leg. It was pretty much over for us after that.”

emoliant broke poorly and never ran a step. it happens. treet, as far as bob goes, I couldn't agree more. no hes not Charlie whittingham or mack miller. hes not old school. I know this. but the game isn't old school anymore either. I know he has broken down horses, but so do others. the difference is he has so many that it gets more publicity because the more high profile horses you have, the more chances are something bad is going to happen to some of them. but what gets me is when the people that bash him then turn right around and root for or cheer lukas. he is the original an worst example of what they claim baffert to be....... a non caring, money hungry, egotistical, public relations machine. the only difference is baffert actually can train his own horses. and yes treet he is also not a bad guy. he is a sarcastic smart ass, but so an I. and he doesn't mean to be demeaning towards others when he is. hes just a wise ass. I have known of him and met him a few times since his los al days. he gets a bad rap from a lot of people who are either jealous of his success or just don't realize who he is. I have a friend who hates on him because he was standing next to him one morning at clockers corner, as a complete stranger mind you, and asked bob to buy his coffee and pastry. bob looked at him and walked away. for that reason he is now hated by this goofball. wtf? why the hell would he pay for it? he doesn't even know you!! now this is where elite1 will jump into the conversation and say he is the antichrist because he didn't train easy goer or Rachel Alexandra and because governor Charlie ran up the track even though squantums picked him. oh wait that doesn't come till tomorrow!!

"Afleet did indeed pick FiftyShades! WTG Afleet! "
Thanks Evelyn!!! I am over the moon! It's such an honor to me that I can manage to pick a winner among some truly fabulous handicappers who are much more serious about running and crunching the numbers on horses than I am. I am just a girl who knows who I like. This year how can you NOT like FiftyShadesOfHay? Now I HAVE to read the darned books!!! LOL! What a positively BRILLIANT name for a horse! I LOVE IT! I KNEW she was ready to roll...and having run behind the amazing Beholder she has likely had some valuable lessons in her race. People can say all they want about she beating nothing, or so & so broke poorly, or blah, blah, blah but the truth be told...NOBODY really looked at her seriously to win. I know how she has been doing and know she was ready to run so I was CRAZY HAPPY and glad I managed to pick her (I picked OXbow too IF Orb wasn't going to win). But NOT looking for accolades or anything...just thrilled that my handicapped brain when it comes to handicapping a race actually worked for me...what's weird is I use very unconventional methods and all the numbers in all the world mean nothing. If a horse ran HORRID last out that certainly doesnt' mean he or she can't win on a big race day. SO glad this filly won! Her owner's brother went to high school with my Aunt up north of me in WA. Always rooting for the home team (sort of) which is also why I was pulling for Gery Stevens or Kevin Krigger to pull off an upset if Orb decided it wasnt' his day.

Wiz, Did you see that when it looked like Govenor Charlie was NOT going to a factor at all....Bob actually started yelling out "Go get 'em Lukey"...Bob was the very same way when he ran against Zenyatta in the BC Classic....he said when his horse wasn't going to win he jumped ship and started cheering for Zenyatta! LOL! Bob is VERY classy like that and despite many seeing him as sarcastic or a smart ass...I didnt' see that side of him at all one-on-one but I can totoally see it when he is in the media lights. He is a VERY nice guy and Jill is also a very nice person. I know many will likely hate on me for saying so but she emails me and keeps me up to date on the horses and always emails me right back if ever I have questions. She was the one who knew how much I loved Point Given and subsequently his son, Coil...she arranged for me to meet up with Bob and the hroses and she is the one who told Bob to make sure to get something good for me out of the closet where they keep all the goodies...hence the Coil BC Saddle cloth. I was BLOWN AWAY! Just SOOOOO happy that with the disappointment of the TC races and injuries to his horses so far that Bob got a big win in the BES with FiftyShadesOfHay.

I agree with you treet. bob has two sides. the side for tv and the side for real life. not trying to be mean here, but how exciting would the horrible tv coverage be if it weren't for guys like bob being sarcastic or controversial once in a while? guys like shug would put what few fans we do have of the game to sleep if he did as many interviews as bob has to do. its been 25 years since I was around the man, but I remember when I was a kid my favorite qh was gold coast express. he was a palomino bob had who won the champion of champions and later became his riding pony at santa anita when he was retired. I was there the night gold coast won the champion of champions and was standing only a few feet away from bob during the race. a friend of my sisters had a huge longshot in the race named moving west who actually broke down and had to be put down in the race. I was only like 13 or 14 and I had bet all of my money on gold coast, like 75 dollars at 3-1. of course I bet 5 bucks on my sisters friends horse to at 50-1. I was cheering louder then baffert was during the race. after the race he looked over at me and laughed and said, "you work harder then I do kid, thanks".

One thing about Baffart is when the poop hits the fan, his PR machine issues an reply. Not him. He hides behind those glasses because he knows he is to quote the Eagles song " those lying eyes"

once again all things that every trainer does. do you think when they do interviews, other trainers divulge every secret or aspect of their training or thinking? that would be like asking belicheck to go over his defensive scheme before the game, and then getting mad at him when he refuses. the only difference between how baffert trains and does his pr work, is that he wins. people love to hate on winners.

I don't respect Baffert that much even though he wins! Of course his win record is good as he is mostly racing 2-3 horses in Cali fields of 5-6! He ruins too many young horses too early in their careers. He is a quarterhorse trainer and probably would be at the top of the 1/4's rankings. Speed is all he knows. He's part of the New School that dollars come before horses.
Anyone know what's going on with Paynter? I hope he's doing well.

Evelyn, Got an email about Paynter and he is doing VERY well...spoiled and happier than ever...training in earnest and lvoing it...I am told that they will look for a race for him soon. WIll let you know if and when I find out anything but from all accounts he is doing FABULOUS!
And Bob is working on not focusing on as much speed these days but his training style often shows speed in his horses because they train perhaps more aggressively than other trainers do so that's why you see such speed. Horses like Game On Dude basically told Bob how it was going to be and training him and racing him any other way wasnt' an option. Personally I think he has REALLY done a great job with his horses the last few years! Looking At Lucky was freaking awesome and so too was Pioneerofthe Nile (who I must say is one of the most perfect looking stallions up close).
Anyway....will keep you posted when I hear any news on Paynter.

for someone who only knows speed, how many tc races has he won? just saying.and this point is coming from the same person who seems to love and respect lukas? take a second and look in your history books at his stats from the 80's and 90's on how many starters he had and how many breakdowns of young horses. baffert pales in comparison.

Thanks afleet! I hope Paynter does well and remains healthy.
wiz - I liked Oxbow because of his breeding, not Lukas. I do respect that Lukas is still training at 77 and I do think he "matured" in thoroughbreds while Baffert did not.
As to Game On Dude, Baffert had no influence on his early training. When he got him, Dude's style was already defined.

well all those breakdowns im referring to for lukas came in tb racing, not qh's. and if you want to respect just because of his age, well that's up to you. I use to respect tommy Lasorda also...............until I found out he was an as****e . also I never mentioned game on dude, but what about, silver charm, real quiet, lookin at lucky, etc.?

I'm with Treet - I had a little run-in with Jill Baffert when TVG was still in operation. I had a difference of opinion on her behavior that one time she confronted Mark Verge about Richards Kid so we exchanged a few emails through TVG. Yeah, she has a temper, but she apologized for her behavior, and I actually thought at the end of the exchange she was a classy lady. Heh - everyone loses their temper once in a while. What makes Bob Baffert stand out in a crowd? It's the white hair, baby.

I was VERY happy for Gary aboard Oxbow...that said I too do NOT prefer to call Lukas my numero uno...my reasoning, I'm sure may perhaps be different than others but my reasons hinge on the wrods from a VERY close and dear friend who worked alongside the likes of Lukas and many others during the 80's and she told me HORROR stories about him breaking down horses, discarding them as worthless, and running them sore...she said he broke down more good horses than any trainer she can think of in her 40+ years of working in the inductry and on the backside.
Bob started in QH's just as Lukas did but the biggest difference I see in Bob (based solely off meeting him and after that meeting I had to admit that he is alot more forthright and concerned about his horses than he ever comes across on TV. The glasses may seem like a ploy to hide his eyes and any sort of deception but actually he has dust allergies and his eyes are always watering & red from it. He jokingly said he hides his eyes otherwise everyone would think he was crying all the time! LOL!
Jill is an amazingly warm and funny lady! She and I also got in touch over at the now defunct TVG board and I think it happened when she was involved in some bashing by other people and she reacted and responded....I felt bad for her because of all the flack she (and Bob) was getting and I told her as much. Then we struck up a conversation and well, the rest is history. We talk at least 4-5 times a month and it is always nice and has elements of personal life such as kids, school, gardening, the weather, our husbands, our lives, and of course the horses. I happen to like her and I also have to admit that if the situations were reversed and I was the trainer of one of America's more recognizable and successful trainers who caught hell and was embroiled in seemingly concocted conspiracies every time I turned around I would likely get a little heated and eract the same way...perhaps it isn't the best way to act AT THE TIME but I have found when it comes to our families and loved ones (especially) we get VERY defensive of them and speak out accordingly. That is what it means to be human.
I will always be a fan because while I was a fan of MANY BAffert horses since early on (and have always also been a fan of Mike Pegram) I had many reservations that he was "shady" (pun intended) but after talking with him and watching him interact with my husband (who knows next to nothing about horses and racing) and be completely engrossed in Hubby's tales of deployment to the Middle East and then to ask me how I kept it all together and show genuine interest and concern and then to take us around to ALL his horses and practically introduce us to all of them and tell us their story it showed how his life revolves around them. He lovingly petted more horses that day and told us what they like, don't like, or how they are feeling. Interestingly enough ExecutivePrivilege was CLEARLY sulking in her stall because she had lost the Juvenile FIllies to Beholder. LOL! Bob said she was still mad about it. Game On Dude is such a "big guy" around the barn but was as sweet as any horse you'd want to meet. Coil (my beloved) was feisty and curious and while not mean spirited he definitely thought it would be funny to grab a hold of my sweater and not let go...there is still a tell tale hole in that sweatshirt which is m=now my gardening/yardwork shirt. We met War Academt, POwer Broker, Super Ninety Nine, Flashback, FiftyShadesofHay, and so many others! It was awesome....when Bob gave me Coil's saddle cloth from the BC he said "He's a little token for you from 'your boy' ", I was floored. SO NICE of him and he knew that while I was crazy abotu ALL the horses, I was over the moon for Coil because I adored Point Given SO MUCH! And speaking of Coil, as soon as he got to Magali Farms they video taped him being turned out in his new paddock for the first time and Jill sent me a copy of it as soon as she got it. It was so awesome and I watched it a couple times. I was thrilled that she remembered how much I loved him and thought enough to share it with me. Contrary to what people may think, they DO care about the fans and embrace them when they can. It is refreshing to see because other "big guns" who shall remain nameless, do NOT give even a second glance or are too busy or almost rude.
They were so nice and such REAL people that even HUbby said Bob was such a cool guy. When we left and said our goodbyes, Bob swalked us out and shook our hands and thanked Hubby for his service, telling him none of us would be here if it weren't for guys like Hubby it was SO sincere and so gracious. I was so proud of Hubby. WHerever we go it is AWESOME to see how much support for our military that the horsemen have. I can't tell you how many of them shook Hubby's hand at the BC meet & greet last year and thanked him. It was awesome!
