I think that's a great story. How did they knew he was in the military? Was he wearing a uniform?
You can't beat horse people - they are for the most part genuine and warm once you know them and once they know you love horses. To them it's a labor of love.

MM, Hubby and I went to the BC (Hubby's first time) and I either mentioned it to Jill prior to our visit OR Hubby & I mentioned it when we met Bob...either way, as soon as he heard Hubby was recently back froim his third deployment Bob perked up and you'd have thought of him and Hubby as a couple chatty Cathy's!! LOL! It was awesome. Doug O'Neill did the same thing profusely shaking hubby's hand and thanking him several times....as did a member of another trainer's entourage but I can't for the life of me remember who it was. Steve Asmussen maybe. Either way it was AWESOME. In 2009 at the Breeder's Cup, West Point TB's along with the USO sponsored a HUGE infield fest for military members and their families and it was AWESOME! Everyone was SO nice and so appreciative of our military which was VERY refreshing and encouraging at the time because Hubby was just a few months into serving his first deployment to the Middle East in Iraq. Anyway, the USO was amazing...WPTB were amazing, and it was a good year. That was the year Zenyatta ran and Hubby (who knows next to nothing about horses and racing) was a HUGE Zen fan and watched almost all her races. Well, that year he was in IRaq and just before Goldikova ran he called me and said, "who is this Goldikova horse?" Well, I did my best to make him understand that she was like the Zenyatta of Europe and an AMAZING filly in her own right. All he said was "Whatever...go big sexy Z!!!" LMAO! Anyway...he called me LITERALLY 20 minuyes after Zenyatta won the Classic and went on to explain to me that he made all his guys file into the tent and watch the race...IN IRAQ!!! He gave them a "briefing" on Zenyatta and they were all convinced enough to do 2 things...cheer for her and TRY to find me in the corwds of people on TV!!! Needless to say they never saw me but Hubby called me after therace and told me he got all the guys to root for Zenyatta and when she swung out wide and got herself through and started running he said ALL his guys were screaming like it was the Superbowl! LMAO! Gotta love it! ANyway, a friend or mine and I got the chance to go visit Zenyatta and Life Is Sweet the day after their BC wins and we told John Shirreffs the story and he LOVED it! He was a MArine (as was Hubby for 13 years) and he was so thrilled by that story. It was freaking awesome!

great story treet and im gkad someone else remembers the 80's and 90's when lukas was known as the grim reaper of 2 year olds. he was the worst ever. I cant believe people even make the comparison between him and baffert. maybe because he is the gr for 3 yr olds - did you not read those recent articles? those were just the fatalities but how do we know how many were injured in training and never made it to a race? i just can't support this guy other than he has tons of horses thus, more injuries - sames as coach in the 80's and 90's i'm NOT a huge lukas fan - my dad had friends who had a horse with him the in the late 80's - horse kept getting checks but they owed every month! speaking in the NOW, coach doesn't have nearly as many horses, thus not as many injuries - he is no longer the corporation that he was - that baffert/pletcher are NOW am waiting for the chrb to follow up those 11 deaths - bet they've hushed it up already! they can't lose the guy who sustains their entries box - bad enough to have 5-6 in a race, but can't run 3-4 - being more positive - my fave trainers are attfield, motion sheppard and small - and shug - motion has proved you can train "old school" and win without being old lol who are yours?

Think Coach may have been the first to take the money route. Also think he's mellowed with age.

no longer the corporation, mellowed with age= lost his big owners and got old, thus making him mostly irrelevant in recent years up until the Preakness. but not by choice. lets not kid ourselves. if he was able to, lukas would still be the multi media, pr, breakdown machine he was back them. my favorites are baffert dutrow, rodriguez, adan farias, and lou pena!

but really, I don't have any favorites anymore. mine was always whittingham. the guys I like now are either friends of mine who I root for or just guys who know how to win races. guys most of you aren't going to like. I actually like baffert. oneil I don't really have an opinion on but I do dislike reddam. I have a real good friend who is friends with him. hes a lowlife. I used to hang around with and still am friends with jogn martin from golden gate and the northern ca. fairs. mickey wins a lot of races
