CHRB Issues Warning About Purina Sweet Feed By Blood-Horse Staff Updated: Friday, March 22, 2013 8:20 PM In hopes of heading off positive drug tests for zilpaterol, the California Horse Racing Board is warning trainers of sweet feed products containing a molasses base produced by Purina at its Turlock, Calif., mill. In an advisory issued March 22, the CHRB said it has concluded a number of such products contain zilpaterol, which is prohibited in racing. Zilpaterol is a beta-2 agonist used to promote weight gain in livestock. ARCI classifies zilpaterol as a Class 3 drug with a Category A penalty. Purina produces a number of sweet feed products under its own name and under the Country Acres brand. To date, all the products were milled at the Turlock plant in February and have included Purina Race Ready, Purina Strategy, Purina Omoline-200, Country Acres Horse Feed, and Country Acres Sweet-12. The Turlock plant is designated TRL on the lot number. The CHRB is particularly interested in Purina products from mid-February from Purina’s Turlock mill. If any licensed trainer or feed company has an unopened bag of any Purina brand from mid-February milled at the Turlock plant, please contact the local CHRB investigator. The CHRB has been working with the California Department of Food and Agriculture on this issue. You know what just happened, don't you? The CHRB just gave Adan Farias an out on his positive drug tests for zilpaterol. He fed Purina sweet feed. I wonder if his attorney is going to jump on this. He'd be a fool if he didn't.

Wasn't his ban awhile ago? The article said the feed was milled in February. Although - sure - his attorney should jump on it. It never ceases to amaze me what we're doing with our food supply - both human and animal. It's one thing wrong about how modern technology is used.

The attorney will say that the Purina mill was 'caught' in February - doesn't mean they weren't processing feed the same way earlier although I would think that would be hard to prove.
Agree about food additives - chocolate flavor is now based on chemicals and not cocoa beans. To me it's a no-brainer on why there's a proliferation of health and weight issues, and for that matter the increase in autism. The most healthy people will be the ones feeding/slaughtering their own animals, raising their own chickens, and growing their own vegies and fruits.

Do you think foods labeled as chemical free, all natural etc. are actually labeled correctly? I've become so suspicious of medicine and have been using more of a holistic approach. New drugs come out and are the "rage" and then in a year or 2 they are pulled off the market. It's frightening.

There's no question that doctors want to give you a pill rather than practice a holistic approach to medicine. We need a new method of training doctors in med school, but that probably will never happen. I can't imagine anybody wanting to be a doctor now that obamacare is being implemented.

Hillary is a political hack. She didn't accomplish much as Sec of State (the 'video' did it). Hopefully she'll feel like an old woman in poor health in 2014 and will not seek the presidency.

Challedon - Me too!
And I do believe in Holistic Medicine but will admit to using some prescriptions when really needed. I just ask the doctor for ones that are not new drugs - and usually just antibiotics.
