Vazquez Suspended 30 Days For Medication Infraction At Suffolk Downs
Paulick
Trainer Juan C. Vazquez was handed a 30-day suspension and fined $2,500 by stewards at Suffolk Downs in Massachusetts after a horse in his care tested positive for hydrocortisone hydrogen succinate – a Class 4 corticosteroid – on Aug. 5.
Vazquez ran six horses at Suffolk Aug. 5, and Here Comes Gary was his sole winner. That victory was negated, with Here Comes Gary placed last because of the positive test and the purse money redistributed. The level of hydrocortisone hydrogen succinate was 4.94 nanograms per milliliter, according to the stewards ruling.
Three days earlier, on Aug. 2, Vazquez had his license suspended by stewards in Pennsylvania as a result of a June 5 check written with insufficient funds to pay for a $2,500 fine for an earlier infraction. That fine was to be paid on or before, May 20, according to a Pennsylvania State Horse Racing Commission ruling. He was restored to good standing Sept. 3 after paying the amount due, plus a $100 fine for writing the bad check.
Vazquez has previously been banned by tracks in three states – Delaware, Maryland and Pennsylvania – and was arrested earlier this year on charges of “theft of services” in connection with an overdue feed bill from an Oxford, Pa., supplier. He has had numerous medication violations in recent years – including the same horse, J.J.'s Candy, being disqualified twice from 2017 maiden victories because of a positive test – leading The Jockey Club to deny him Stud Book privileges.
The suspension is to run Sept. 6-Oct. 5.
