BALTIMORE – Questions abound regarding the 11 3-year-old fillies in the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan at Pimlico on Friday, and determining who will have the right race-day answer is no easy assignment.
The 1 1/8-mile Black-Eyed Susan is one of seven stakes on the 14-race program, which also includes the Grade 3, $300,000 Pimlico Special. The card has total purses of $1.37 million. Last year, betting reached $18.6 million.
A special two-day daily double will link the $250,000 Black-Eyed Susan with the Preakness. There are a trio of $300,000-guaranteed pools Friday: the pick five that starts on race 7, the race 8 pick four, and a pick four that begins with the Black-Eyed Susan, race 11.
Black-Eyed Susan entrant Summer Luck, trained by Mark Casse, finished fast and came within three-quarters of a length of catching the victorious Miss Sky Warrior in the one-mile Davona Dale at Gulfstream Park. But when stretched out a sixteenth of a mile farther in the Grade 1 Ashland at Keeneland on April 8, she could barely make a dent late and finished fifth.
Norm Casse, assistant to his father, points out that the Ashland race shape did not favor Summer Luck’s style.
