What do you think of this? I played Lani in the Belmont and while he's supposed to a bit quirky, he ran an eye opening third!
CHURCHILL, JRA CREATE:JAPAN ROAD TO THE KENTUCKY DERBY TDN
Churchill Downs Incorporated has partnered with the Japan Racing Association (JRA) to create a series of races in Japan that could annually produce a starter in the GI Kentucky Derby, the two organizations announced Monday. The new AJapan Road to the Kentucky Derby@ includes two one-mile dirt stakes races at Tokyo Racecourse, the Cattleya Sho for juveniles Nov. 26 and the Hyacinth for 3-year-olds in early 2017. Separate from the existing ARoad to the Kentucky Derby@ series in North America, the horse who accrues the most points in the two Japanese races will be awarded a spot in the Kentucky Derby starting gate.
All of us at Churchill Downs are thrilled to partner with the Japan Racing Association to create this exciting new series to provide an entry in the Kentucky Derby for a horse from Japan,@ said Bill Mudd, President and Chief Operating Officer at Churchill Downs Incorporated.
Mudd continued, Horse racing in Japan is a tremendously popular sport. The competition is world-class and features some of the most accomplished runners in the world. This series provides a path for the top 3-year-old in the country to participate in the >greatest two minutes in sports.= We saw sizeable international interest through Lani (Tapit)=s participation in this year=s Triple Crown and we=re thrilled that, through this partnership, we can add to the worldwide popularity of the Kentucky Derby.
Lani, a Kentucky-bred, became the second horse based in Japan to compete inthe Kentucky Derby earlier this year after he won the G2 UAE Derby in Dubai. The gray competed in all three races in the American Triple Crown, culminating with a third-place run in the GI Belmont S. June 11. Earlier in his career, Lani won the Cattleya Sho and finished fifth in the Hyacinth.
AI am very pleased to be able to launch the >Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby= in partnership with Churchill Downs Incorporated,@ said Mr. Masayuki Goto, President and CEO of the JRA. AIt is with great pride that >My Old Kentucky Home= will reach Japanese racing fans and it is my earnest wish to sing it with a traditional Mint Julep in my hand, together with Japanese horsemen and all the many fans next year at Churchill DownsRacetrack.
The top four finishers in the Cattleya Sho will earn point values of 40-16-8-4, respectively, while the top four in the Hyacinth will earn 50-20-10-5.
The points were structured to avoid an automatic qualifier for the winner of one particular race over the other.
Churchill Downs also released the list of 35 select stakes races that comprise the ARoad to the Kentucky Derby@, with a sliding scale of points awarded to the top four finishers in qualifying

Absolute garbage. You run in glorified allowance races in Japan and you gain points into the GREATEST 3 yr old race. Just wondering how this will play if a Baffert or Pletcher horse is bumped from the Derby? I have always been a firm believer that all the preps should have the same point structure or something close and they should all be run here. A structure of a Maximum point race @ 25-15-10-5 and a minimum 15-10-5-3 should make the prep season interesting and have our 3 yr olds running in a few more preps.( I despise Win and in races).

But at the same time I would also like to reward those horses based on earnings (yes and that includes non-graded stakes horses) and allow them entry into the KD for reasons I will mention in a few paragraphs. I agree that this Japan racing angle with CD is weird and my gut reaction is that I don't like it. What I would like is coupled entries in the Kentucky Derby. I think there needs to incorporate a return to more strategic trips in the derby. the last few years the derby has been stacked with E/EP types and it would be really interesting if Pressers/Stalkers who have graded stakes victories were coupled with E/EP non-graded stakes winners in order to create some chaos. That would result in better prices across the board.

huh? your suggesting run horses as coupled entries who aren't owned or trained by the same person just to make it easier to handicap the races? uh, ok?
I agree with nose to a point. I do think it is unfair for a race in april to be worth 100 points just because of the date of the race when a race in February may very well have had a better field. the differential in points given is a joke. also money earned shouldn't count for anything as far as I'm concerned. according to that, they could just make every 2 yr. old race run in new yorka win and your in just because of their bloated purses even though it is proven fact over the last 5 years that those races produce weak horses who are not competitive come derby day. I think the point system is the way to go, but it just needs to be tweaked so that it is more even.

i'm not suggesting that horses run as coupled entries under the conditions you described, nor am I even considering the difficulty of handicapping or said skill that would be required if there were coupled entries. I am merely making an observation that since I have been following horse racing in parallel to this points system that the races have been two or three front runners dominating the race start to finish and that is an astetical observation I am making.. nothing to do with the greatness of the horses or the handicapping or whatever..
I want more interesting races, to which means I want them to set up and finish the way I like races to look, so therefore I want the race to be more exciting.
We may disagree on our visual preferences idk but this has really nothing to do with handicapping. Although obviously what I am advocating would theoretically have an effect.

I agree with no Win and You're In races. I also think all should have the same points - maybe not the few 2 yr old races but certainly all the 3 yr old ones. And I guess I could understand Win and You're In for the BC (they need better horses for the BC!) but not for American Classics such as the TC!

My biggest gripe about this is the AUTOMATIC bid that the Japanese horse gets even if he is #50 in points. It just allows this crap to bump another horse who may have 20 more points than him and sitting at #20 and he gets a free ride into the race. I don't think people realize this, that no matter how many points he has HE GETS IN NO MATTER WHAT, even if he has 10 points he can bump a horse with 40 or 50X his point total.

I for one think most races won by closers are by default because the race does set up for them, and that's great if you can figure it beforehand. but to start trying to dictate how a race will set up or be run by having horses run as entries doesn't seem very plausible.

Wiz - Europe has stopped sending their best horses for years.
I agree that the Derby field should be smaller. I also agree that the Derby doesn't need to be international.
Your comments about my dear friend are becoming really annoying and are not necessary! (besides being 100% wrong)

LMAO - She's not the only one Wiz. The BNC ain't what it used to be! Could care less if foreign horses enter the Derby. Hate the Win and You're In. And the field size needs to go down - 16 max.

Your comments about my dear friend are becoming really annoying and are not necessary! (besides being 100% wrong) I think the comments are pretty spot on actually. the only time I ever see her post anything is when she has something disparaging to say about west coast racing, the breeders cup, or racing in general compared to say 30 or 40 years ago. she acts as if she would rather see the sport fail now if it cant go back to the way it was in the 70's or 80's rather then just make the best of the hand we have been dealt. regardless of personal issues, I just think she is exactly what I said. a terrorist against racing and its continued existence.
as far as Europe goes, one reason is simply the timeframe. their biggest race is and always has bee the ARC, and it is usually run too close to the breeders cup for the main contenders to feel comfortable running in both. this year might prove different as there is an extra 2 weeks between the two. but even if the y don't come, so what? the breeders cup has full fields of competitive races every year, and they are filled by the best horses we have here for the most part. just like the derby, the breeders cup does not need some straggler from japan or where ever else to be successful. if they want to come and get in the race following whatever rules or guidelines are previously set then fine. but we don't need to be changing the rules just to get them over here. but as far as the field being to big for the derby? nah, it is what it is. that's what makes it difficult to win. if they need to do anything to tweek the derby it is to move it back a month or two to give the horses more time to mature before being asked to run that distance. I'm fine with the time between races for the tc, but the starting date is just to early.

doubt it's predisposed - 90% agree bc is a shadow of it's former self - the euros are definitely missed in the turf races - not to mention the bc bills itself as a WORLD championship - the derby doesn't - hell - it's an American icon
