Champion Take Charge Brandi Retired
Bloodhorse
Take Charge Brandi, 2014 champion 2-year-old filly and a stakes winner this year, has been retired from racing and will be sent to John Sikura's Hill 'n' Dale Farms near Lexington, it was announced Sept. 28
A winner of the 14 Hands Winery Breeder's Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I), Starlet Stakes (gr. I) and Delta Downs Princess Stakes (gr. III) in 2014, Take Charge Brandi (Giant's Causeway —Charming, by Seeking the Gold) also won the Martha Washington Stakes this year. She retires with career earnings of $1,692,126.
"You hate to see a champion retire but it was the right thing to do," said Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas. "This family has been so good to me and (owner) Willis Horton. Take Charge Brandi was supremely talented and determined. I almost ran her in the Los Alamitos Futurity (gr. I) the week after the Starlet and think she would have been very tough to beat. She reminds me of Serena's Song in her determination and natural ability.
"She is the complete package and has everything you look for in a great broodmare prospect," Lukas said.
"She was a great champion and we just ran out of time making the Breeders' Cup again," said Horton. "She owns the best pedigree in the stud book and loved to win races. The family has been great to me owning champion Will Take Charge, and we are very high on her half sister." Take Charge Tressa (by War Front —Charming) was the sale-topping filly at Saratoga last year at $1,250,000.
A decision will be made in coming weeks whether Take Charge Brandi will be bred or offered for sale at the Keeneland November sale.
