Collmus to Call Charles Town Events in 2013
Charles Town, WV (February 6, 2013) – For a second consecutive year, Larry Collmus, NBC’s voice of the Triple Crown and Breeders’ Cup Classic as well the regular announcer at Gulfstream Park and Monmouth, will return to Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races as the race caller for the $1,500,000 Charles Town Classic (G2) on April 20 as well as West Virginia Breeders’ Classics XXVII on October 19.
While he’ll be reprising his role on Charles Town Classic and West Virginia Breeders’ Classic days, Collmus will also assume the duties calling stakes on Charles Town’s third event day in 2013 – the September 21 Race for the Ribbon card that features both the $400,000 Charles Town Oaks and $400,000 Researcher.
"As someone who grew up going to the races at Charles Town, it's been terrific to see these races grow in stature every year and become must see events in the national racing scene,” said Collmus. “It's exciting to play a part of it and an honor to be asked to call them.”
Collmus, who got his start calling races as an 18-year-old at Bowie Racecourse in 1985 has had stops calling at Birmingham, Golden Gate Fields, Bay Meadows and Suffolk Downs in addition to his current roles at Gulfstream and Monmouth. In 2011, Collmus was tabbed by NBC to replace Tom Durkin in calling the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes on its network and added the Breeders’ Cup Classic to his resume one year later when he called Fort Larned’s dramatic win over Mucho Macho Man in November.
Post time for the first race on Charles Town Classic day is 5pm EST. The Charles Town Classic itself, which received a $500,000 purse increase for 2013, bringing it to its current $1,500,000 total, is tentatively scheduled to go off at 10:30pm.
