Will blinkers help, hurt, make no difference for Overanalyze? (We know Rosie helps!!) Will Deshawn spring an upset at "his" track?!
Reminder - 2pm post for Mountaineer on Derby Day
DRF Departing, Overanalyze head nine-horse field at Mountaineer
Departing was assigned post 5 and Overanalyze got the outside post as the top contenders in a field of nine 3-year-olds in the Grade 2, $750,000 West Virginia Derby, the annual showcase event at Mountaineer Racetrack.
The 1 1/8-mile West Virginia Derby, to be run Saturday, also got Say Ow (post 3), in off back-to-back wins at Betfair Hollywood Park, and an improving Steve Asmussen colt, Betweenhereandcool (post 4).
Departing, who had his final workout Monday at Saratoga, will be ridden by Robby Albarado. Depart will be making his first start since finishing sixth in the May 18 Preakness. His regular rider, Brian Hernandez Jr., is otherwise occupied Saturday with Fort Larned in the Whitney at Saratoga.
Overanalyze, most recently seventh in the June 8 Belmont Stakes for owner Mike Repole and trainer Todd Pletcher, will be ridden by Rosie Napravnik and equipped with blinkers for the first time.
From the rail, this is the field for the 44th West Virginia Derby: Shaler, DeShawn Parker; Ruler of Love, Calvin Borel; Say Ow, Saul Arias; Betweenhereandcool, Ricardo Santana Jr.; Departing, Albarado; Mi Sto Divertendo, Marco Ccmaque; Ledokol, no rider; Stratocruiser, Alex Cintron; and Overanalyze, Napravnik.
Mountaineer normally runs evenings except for its biggest program, when first post is 2 p.m. Eastern. The feature goes as the eighth of nine races, all of them unrestricted stakes, with post time set for 5:45. Purses for the entire day will total $1.65 million.
The West Virginia Derby will be televised live on several Fox Sports Network affiliates, with Chris Lincoln hosting the one-hour show.
Departing was an impressive winner of the Grade 3 Illinois Derby two starts back, while Overanalyze can claim victories in the Grade 2 Remsen and Grade 1 Arkansas Derby.
Betweenhereandcool, by the recently deceased Unbridled’s Song, most recently was second by a neck to Looking Cool in the Grade 3 Iowa Derby. Asmussen has won the West Virginia Derby four times, including the 2012 running with Macho Macho.
Say Ow, by Langfuhr, has been based in California with Julio Canani but since has been transferred by his owner, the Premae Company LLC, to Chuck Kieser, a 59-year-old former jockey who oversees a small stable at Mountaineer.
One of the longshots in the field, Stratocruiser, is a homebred Langfuhr colt owned by the Dream Walkin Farms of country music superstar Toby Keith. He will be shipping in from Delaware Park for Kenny Smith.
The undercard races are comprised of seven $100,000 stakes and the $200,000 West Virginia Governor’s Stakes (race 7), a 1 1/16-mile race that drew eight older horses, including the uncoupled Pletcher duo of Percussion and Mordi’s Miracle. Napravnik is named on both.

The 44th running of the $750,000, GII West Virginia Derby, for 3yo only, at 1 1/8 mile will be the grand finale of Mountaineer’s biggest day of racing that will feature multiple 6 figure Stakes events this coming Saturday. Leading a good-sized field of 9 towards the Mountaineer starting gates this Saturday is, Overanalyze , winner of the GI Arkansas Derby on closing at Oaklawn Park this past spring, faltered over the slop at Churchill in this year’s Kentucky Derby with an 11th finish and finished well back of Palace Malice for 8th in the Belmont Stakes last out. Apparently the Pletcher barn has figured out he isn’t a marathon horse so he’ll get cutback to the 1 1/8 mile distance here at Mountaineer this Saturday instead of waiting on a 1 1/4 mile GI Travers Stakes outing up at Saratoga this August 24th. Departing , was an impressive winner of the GIII Illinois Derby 2 back, then came a very middling 6th last out in the GI Preakness Stakes at Pimlico. He too is cutting back to this 1 1/8 mile distance here on Saturday as he and Overanalyze will probably take most of the money for GII classic as they are the class of this field. Betweenhereandcool , finished a very close 2nd in the GIII Iowa Derby as he was closing in on Looking Cool ( last seen running 6th in last weekend’s GII Jim Dandy Stakes)but came up just a neck short at the line. It could be this Steve Asmussen trained 3yo is just now hitting his best seasonal form as he has quickly made his way up the ladder in his last 3 starts looking to make a big splash on the 3yo division this Saturday. Stratocruiser and Ruler of Love, are bringing some Stakes experience but no Stakes wins to this GII field while Say Ow , is coming off an Alw win last out at BHP and will have to ship in for this 1 1/8 mile run. The rest this 2013 edition are but non-maiden and alw runners still looking to jump start their 3yo campiagn’s. Post Time will be – 5:45 pm ET PP. Horse Jockey Wgt Trainer 1. Departing captures West Virginia Derby By Sports Network Departing, ridden by Robby Albarado, came from off the pace to win Saturday's 44th running of the 1 1/8-mile $750,000 West Virginia Derby at Mountaineer Park. Trained by Al Stall Jr., Departing was sent off as the 7-5 favorite in the nine-horse field with Overanalyze, trained by Todd Pletcher, the 2-1 second choice. Departing, owned by Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneider, was racing off the pace that was being set by Ruler of Love and Hall of Fame jockey Calvin Borel. Overanalyze was running third as the field entered the far turn. Departing came wide around the final turn and took the lead entering the stretch. The 3-year-old gelding powered his way to an 8 3/4-length victory over Ruler of Love. Overanalyze held on for third followed by Betweenhereandcool, Shaler, Stratocruiser, Say Ow, Ledokol and Mi Sto Divertendo. The time for the West Virginia Derby was 1:51.47 on a fast track. "That's his race right there," Stall said. "Once he gets underneath himself he's really a nice horse." The winner in April of the Illinois Derby, Departing picks up $451,500 for the West Virginia win. The gelding has pocketed just over a $1 million in seven lifetime starts with five wins. Stall said after the race that Departing could start next either in the Indiana, Pennsylvania or Super Derbies. "The Travers could be under consideration," Stall said. "But, everybody sees what's been happening with the Todd Pletcher horses in Saratoga and Monmouth. So, we'll just kind of ride it out. It'll be one more 3-year-old race for sure." Departing was making his first start since finishing sixth to Oxbow in the Preakness. After winning his only start as a 2-year-old, he began 2013 with an allowance win at Fair Grounds and a minor stakes victory at Sam Houston Park. He was third in the Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds prior to the Illinois Derby. Departing paid $4.80, $3.20 and $2.20. Ruler of Love returned $8.60 and $4.00, and Overanalyze paid $2.40 to show.
