Zenyatta delivers second foal, colt by Tapit
By Nicole Russo
Champion Zenyatta delivered her second foal, a colt by popular commercial sire Tapit, late the night of Monday, April 1 at Lane's End Farm in Versailles, Ky.
The colt was foaled at 11:47 p.m. Eastern time. He shares a birthday with his dam, who was foaled April 1, 2004.
Zenyatta, a daughter of Street Cry, has been boarded at Lane's End for owners Jerry and Ann Moss since her retirement from racing in late 2010. The mare delivered her first foal, a colt by Bernardini, on March 8, 2012. The as-of-yet-unnamed yearling resides at Lane's End.
Zenyatta, the 2010 Horse of the Year and champion older female in three consecutive years, won 19 of her 20 career starts, including the 2009 Breeders' Cup Classic and the 2008 Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic. The victories make her the only horse ever to win two different Breeders' Cup races.
She won 13 total Grade 1 events, including three editions each of the Vanity Handicap and Lady's Secret Stakes, and two editions of the Apple Blossom Handicap. She finished second by a head to Blame in the 2010 Breeders' Cup Classic in her career finale. She retired with earnings of $7,304,580, making her the all-time leader among North American females.
Hopes have been high for Zenyatta as a broodmare, not only because of her racing record, but because she comes from a productive female family. Her dam, the winning Kris S. mare Vertigineux, is the dam of five winners from six starters, including multiple Grade 1 winner and millionaire Balance and stakes winner Where's Bailey.
Vertigineux is a half sister to stakes winner and producer Restrained; stakes winners Blash and National Service; and stakes placed On the Staff, also a stakes producer. Their dam, the winning Forli mare For the Flag, is a half sister to Grade 3 winner and stakes producer Helenska and to Miss Reality, the granddam of Canadian champion Sweetest Thing.
Zenyatta's fourth dam, Mrs. Peterkin, is a half sister to three stakes winners. Her offspring include Kentucky Oaks winner Sweet Alliance, who produced three stakes winners, including champion Shareef Dancer; Kinema, dam of Grade 1 winner and successful sire Mizzen Mast along with three other stakes placed winners; Grade 2 winner Dancing Camp, dam of stakes placed Farouche, also a stakes producer; stakes winner Whydidju, who is represented by several stakes producing daughters of her own; and stakes producers Minstrelsy, Miss Pete, Banderole, and Nijistar.
Vertigineux, who was privately purchased by Coolmore Stud in the fall of 2008, is currently in foal to Street Cry for a full sibling to Zenyatta.
Tapit, a 12-year-old Pulpit horse, stands at Gainesway Farm in Lexington, Ky. for an advertised fee of $125,000 in 2013, the co-second highest in North America.
The sire of juvenile champions Stardom Bound and Hansen joins Bernardini on a select list of stallions to be bred to two female Horse of the Year honorees. Havre de Grace, the 2011 Horse of the Year purchased for a record $10 million by Mandy Pope's Whisper Hill Farm at last November's Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall selected mixed sale, is in Tapit's book for 2013.
In addition to siring Zenyatta's first foal, Bernardini is represented by a filly out of 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra, delivered Feb. 12.
