Katella Handicap
Sunday 3/24
Paul Blanchard’s Bills Last, who was so impressive when running second in the Los Alamitos Winter Championship last month, will now face an accomplished field of older horses in the $25,000 Katella Handicap on Sunday at Los Alamitos. First post is 5:15 p.m.
Bills Last has been outstanding in his two local starts. He ran second to the always consistent Last To Fire in their Winter Championship trial and then came back to take the early lead in the Winter Championship before getting caught at the wire by the multiple AQHA Champion Rylees Boy in the Winter Championship final. Bills Last, who ran in all three major derbies at Ruidoso Downs last year, will start from post five for trainer Paul Jones in this race. Jones will also saddle First Down Dash Handicap winner Kas On Fly in post seven in this race. Kas On Fly ran third in the Anaheim Handicap in his most recent start.
Bobby Cox and Chad Hart’s Jumpn Shake will also race after being second to Kas On Fly in the First Down Dash, but ahead of him when second in the Anaheim. The 5-year-old stallion has finished in the top two in five of his last six starts.
Starting from along the rail will be Mesa Valley Farms’ Fols Jesse, who is a two-time stakes winner at Los Alamitos. Trained by Mark Skeen, Fols Jesse won the Kip Didericksen Handicap last season and the Cypress Handicap earlier this year. Like Jumpn Shake, Fols Jesse seems to always be in the top two. In his career, he has finished first or second in nine of his 12 career outings.
The four other sprinters in the Katella each sport great resumes. Chicks Boudro will be making his first start since running third to Ima Chickie Two in the PCQHRA Breeders Derby and he was also third in the Dillingham Handicap and qualified to the Governor’s Cup Derby. He had a nice :12 second drill at 220 yards on February 23 to prepare for this race. Gone With A Win comes into this race after posting victories in his two 2013 outings. He began the meet with a win over $20,000 claimers and he recently rallied to score a gritty allowance win on February 15.
Trainer Jose Moreno will saddle a pair of top runners in the Katella Handicap. He’ll send out Personal Mission from post four in what will be his first start since a very troubled outing in a Winter Championship trial. A seven-time career winner, the son of Special Leader won two stakes races last year including a head decision in the Huntington Beach Handicap. The trainer will also send out Pot O Cash, who won the Independence Day Handicap last year and most recently scored a half-length victory against $50,000 claimers on February 9.
