Dortmund Retired, Announced As One Of Six New Maryland Stallions For 2018

Kaleem Shah's Dortmund was first announced to have retired in April of 2017, but the chestnut son of Big Brown returned to training under Art Sherman's care in anticipation of a start in the Sept. 30 G1 Awesome Again Stakes. According to bloodhorse.com, connections weren't pleased with the 5-year-old's final workout for that race, so Dortmund was scratched.
On Oct. 20, Shah announced that Dortmund has been retired to stand the 2018 breeding season in Maryland at Bonita Farm. A stud fee for the dual Grade 1-winning millionaire will be announced at a later date.
“(Sherman and assistant trainer Alan Sherman) didn't give me the thumbs up on him after that work,” Shah said. “We were only going to race if he was training with the same gusto (he showed early in his career). I would have brought him back if he was.”
As Jim McKay Million Day gets ready for its 32nd renewal on Saturday, several other Maryland breeding farms are announcing new additions to their rosters for 2018. The farms that have announced new stallions include:
• Anchor & Hope Farm – Holy Boss
• Bonita Farm — Alliance and Dortmund
• Heritage Stallion Station – Editorial
• Murmur Farm – Blofeld
• Northview Stallion Station – Madefromlucky
“The focus of the Maryland Million program is Maryland stallions and to see that the breeding farms are bringing a new and diverse group of stallions for the 2018 breeding season is very exciting,” said Cricket Goodall, executive director of the Maryland Million.
The Maryland Million program, modeled on the Breeders' Cup, has concentrated on the stallions and the commerce that is created when mares come to Maryland to be bred. The Maryland industry is experiencing revitalization, and the recent number of mares bred and foals born reflect that. Jim McKay Maryland Million Day at Laurel Park Saturday is the showcase for all of those Maryland horses.
