Slow is slow but you could have timed them with a sundial yesterday.
Bluegrass = 1:50.39 Wood = 1:50.91 SA Derby = 1:51.91
It may have been the track but it is hard for me to believe that ALL 3 tracks played that slow on a major race day.

Mr Nose don't pay attention to the times of the races look at how each horse ran. They say time only matters to those in prison.

Gormley looked OK but the other two winners finished poorly in my eyes. I also thought Practical Joke came out ever so slightly on McCraken a couple of times in the stretch but I think McCraken really needed that race. I don't believe that either of the first two finishers want any part of a 1 1/4.

thanks for that information about the blue grass. this year anything could happen. As I've stated I'm impressed the way Irish War Cry bounced back This could end the woods non entity in the derby.

Just a note from 2007 -2014 the Bluegrass was run on Polytrack.

Irap had the best pedigree, storm cat on the dam side (so did Wild Smash) .. dunno if Irap can go 1 1/4 however as the fractions get slower as the distance gets longer it could suit up well for Irap

He will have to finish faster than he did or he'll get swept up by the closers.

Some #s to ponder while we look towards the last two(1 actually) preps. These are times for the race pace and shape not for the horse who won except by those that led at the 3/4(6f). This is not to say the winner did not finish quickly and have a nice final 1/8 just thought I would put these out for those who like such things.
year-winner-time(6f-1M)-final time(1M-1 1/4)
2006-Barbaro-26/24.1 2007-Street Sense-25.4/25.0 2008-Big Brown-25.2/25.2 2009-Mine That Bird-25.2/25.1 2010-Super Saver-27/26.4 2011-Animal Kingdom-24/24.2 2012-I'll Have Another-25.2/26.3 2013-Orb-26.1/26.3 2014-California Chrome-25.3/26.1 2015-American Pharoah-25.0/26.3 2016-Nyquist-25.1/25.3
Starting with Animal Kingdom I noticed that the last 1/4 was slower than the previous, once again that not be true for the winner but it does give pause to how we handicap this derby being that there is no real standout at this point.
