Of course I agree the name is sexist! Should the kids choose a horse?
A Horse With No Name: KY High School Scraps ‘Stallions’ Mascot After Public Uproar
Paulick Report
new high school in Lexington, Ky., will have to come up with a new name for its mascot and athletic teams after public outcry resulted in officials scrapping the name originally proposed.
The Lexington Herald-Leader reports that officials from Frederick Douglass High School, which is currently under construction and set to open in the fall, had planned calling the teams the ‘Stallions'. School officials revealed the name earlier this week during a news conference where they also introduced the new head football coach. The school colors and new football uniforms were also unveiled at that time. The name was intended to pay homage to the area where the school is located, which was formerly part of the historic Hamburg Place farm founded by John E. Madden.
Not everyone was too thrilled with the name choice, however. Lexington resident Diane Cahill created an online petition at Change.org, asking that ‘Stallions' be dropped as the mascot name, in part because it was “inappropriate and sexist” for any of the female athletic teams to be called that.
The next day, school officials changed course, and said that while they would keep the school colors and the horse theme, they would let students decide the mascot name.
“Moving forward, we will keep the Keeneland green and orange colors and horse image in the school logo to pay homage to Lexington's rich history in the horse industry, but we will allow the incoming students of Frederick Douglass High School to choose their mascot,” officials said in a press release.
“We've already received suggestions of Thoroughbreds or Racers as possible alternatives to Stallions and we will solicit additional ideas from our students before they choose a horse-themed mascot grounded in the land's equestrian heritage.”
