Borell, Drawing Away Stable Part Ways

Maria Borell, who saddled Jim McIngvale's champion sprinter Runhappy to five consecutive victories in 2015 but was fired the day after the Super Saver colt won the Breeders' Cup Sprint at Keeneland, is no longer training for the Drawing Away Stable, which announced in December it was adding her to its roster of trainers.
Ed Boden, managing partner for Drawing Away Stable, said the six horses that previously were in Borell's care at a training center adjacent to Gulfstream Park West (formerly Calder) were transferred to other trainers last week.
“The son of the owner of the training center wanted the horses out as soon as possible,” said Boden. “Plus we got some phone calls. One of our partners went down there, met with a lot of people, and we had the horses shipped from the training center to Gulfstream Park.
“Maria was nice to work with, but I guess she just got in over her head in finances,” he added. “With our deal, none of the bills go to us; they go to our trainer. Our trainers get the majority of the purse because they are paying all the expenses.”
In 2016, Borell has started 16 runners, with zero wins, three seconds and three thirds for total earnings of $33,800. Her last runner for the operation was Stock (co-owned with Force of Nature Farms), fifth-place finisher in a $25,000 claiming race at Gulfstream Park May 11. In addition to the horses Borell had with Drawing Away, she claimed at least two horses in December for another partnership. Those horses were transferred to other trainers earlier this year.
“We wanted her out,” said Joe Iadisernia, son of the training center's owner, Giuseppe Iadisernia. “We don't like problems.”
The training center, which includes a training track, round pen, pool and access to the Gulfstream Park West/Calder racing surface, charges $15 a day per stall.
Borell did not return phone calls but said in a text message that she been unable to get stalls at Gulfstream Park after submitting three separate applications over the last six months.
