Del Mar Pushes For Online Poker Rights In California Paulick Report
California horse racing tracks would really like to add online poker games to their gambling repertoire. While not yet legal in the state, tracks like Del Mar are hopeful that adding revenue from poker websites will allow them to expand purse structures, attracting a higher quality of racehorse. Perhaps even American Pharoah would have been tempted to test his merit where “the turf meets the surf.”
The biggest opponents to California tracks launching poker websites are the tribal casinos, despite the fact that the only legal form of online gambling is currently betting horse races. According to Del Mar chief operating officer Josh Rubinstein, when the tribal casinos try to tell racetracks that “‘you guys can’t play in that arena and we’ll throw you some scraps,’ that, in our opinion, is not going to benefit our industry.”
Rubinstein is more than willing to negotiate with the tribes, including a contractual promise that the racetracks’ entrance into casino-style gaming would be strictly limited to online poker. However, the legal battle has been ongoing for several years now because a few of the tribes are not yet convinced. Rubinstein implores racing fans: “If you’re a horse racing fan and you love to see the top horses run, this is an important issue for you.”
