Stakes-winning 3yo Gimme Da Lute euthanized after post-surgical accident Jay Privman DRF
GIMME DA LUTE, a multiple stakes-winning 3-year-old for trainer Bob Baffert, had to be euthanized earlier this week when he fractured a hind leg coming out of surgery, Baffert said Friday morning.
Gimme Da Lute worked a half-mile in 46.40 seconds on Tuesday morning at Santa Anita, the best time of 35 at the distance. Afterwards, Baffert said, he "was off" back at the barn, necessitating X-rays, which showed a condylar fracture in a hind leg.
Surgery was performed on Wednesday at Santa Anita, and two screws were inserted, "but when he got up he got up wrong, twisted it, and broke his leg, and they had to put him down," Baffert said.
"It's pretty tough," Baffert said. "I've heard of it happening before, but it had never happened to one of mine."
The most-famous horse who fractured a leg coming out of surgery was the great Ruffian, who also had to be euthanized.
Gimme Da Lute won six times in nine starts and had won his last four starts, all stakes, including the Grade 2 Los Alamitos Derby in June. His most-recent start was on Aug. 29, when he won the El Cajon Stakes at Del Mar.
Gimme Da Lute had been training for the $100,000 Cary Grant Stakes at Del Mar on Nov. 22.
Gimme Da Lute, a son of Midnight Lute, was bred and owned by Mike Pegram, Karl Watson, and Paul Weitman.
