Lane's End Buys Interest in Liam's Map
BloodHorse
Lane's End has acquired an interest in Teresa Viola Racing Stables and West Point Thoroughbreds Liam's Map, according to a news release from the Versailles, Ky. farm.
A grade I winner in his last start, the Woodward Stakes at Saratoga Race Course, Liam's Map is the even-money morning-line favorite for the upcoming Las Vegas Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (gr.I) at Keeneland.
The 4-year-old son of Unbridled's Song was an $800,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase, broke his maiden by more than 9 1/2 lengths at second asking in a Belmont Park, and capped his 3-year-old year by defeating older horses in the listed Harlan's Holiday Stakes at Gulfstream Park.
Runner-up to Honor Code in the Whitney Stakes (gr. I), Liam's Map returned less than a month later to win the 1 1/8 mile Woodward in 1:47 2/5, the fastest time since 2004 for the historic race.
"We're thrilled to be involved with a horse of the quality of Liam's Map." said Lane's End owner Will Farish. "The Woodward is a very important race and we've been very lucky with past winners like Quality Road , Saint Liam, and Lemon Drop Kid that have gone on to be very successful stallions. His speed figures are unbelievable. His ability to go that fast that far is uncanny. He's only the second wire-to-wire winner of that race in over 20 years, while posting one of the best times in recent memory.
"Vincent and Teresa Viola are very prominent in the Thoroughbred business today. We are very excited to stand their first stallion at stud, especially a horse the caliber of Liam's Map."
"I have loved Liam since the day we bought him," Teresa Viola said. "He has been a very special horse to our family. Vinnie and I plan on doing everything we can to help him succeed at stud. We are thrilled to have him going to Lane's End, the home of so many great stallions."
Bred by Albaugh Family Stable, Liam's Map is the second foal out of the grade III winner Miss Macy Sue, who won 11 races over four seasons with earnings of $880,915. Miss Macy Sue traces back to the hugely influential mare Aspidistra, the foundation mare responsible for the likes of Dr. Fager and Unbridled. Liam's Map's pedigree also contains four strains from champion and Hall of Fame sprinter Ta Wee.
