might be his last - go old boy!
Ben's Cat Nominated for Sixth MD Million Bloodhorse
The 30th anniversary of the Jim McKay Maryland Million will be celebrated Oct. 17 at Laurel Park with the running of nine stakes, which attracted a total of 155 nominations.
The star of the $1 million showcase for horses sired by accredited Maryland stallions is again expected to be Ben's Cat, who is scheduled to make his sixth consecutive Maryland Million appearance. Bred, owned, and trained by Hall of Famer King Leatherbury, Ben's Cat was nominated for both the $100,000 Sprint, a six-furlong event on the main track that drew 12 nominations, and the mile $125,000 Turf, which attracted 23 nominations.
The 19 nominees for the $150,000 Classic include oldie-but-goodie Not Abroad, the 8-year-old who captured the 1 1/8-mile stakes for 3-year-olds and older in 2012. Noteworthy Peach, the runner-up in the $100,000 Federico Tesio for 3-year-olds at Pimlico Race Course in the spring, is nominated to take on the elder multiple-stakes winner after finishing first or second in his last six starts.
Talk Show Man, who finished sixth in the Commonwealth Cup (gr. IIT) in September, and Phlash Phelps, who is riding a three-race win streak that includes a score in the Find Stakes on the Laurel turf course on Aug. 22 and a five-length allowance romp at Pimlico in May, have been nominated to both the Classic and Turf.
Michael Harrison's Talk Show Man is the defending Turf champion, having closed with a rush to defeat Ben's Cat by a half-length in 2014.
The Todd Pletcher-trained Bullheaded Boy, a two-time winner from four starts on turf at Belmont Park, was also nominated for both the Classic and Turf.
Dark Hollow Farm's Joy tops the list of 20 nominations for the $125,000 Ladies, a 1 1/8-mile turf stakes for fillies and mares. The Graham Motion-trained multiple stakes winner, who finished sixth on a yielding Laurel course in the $150,000 Lady Baltimore Sept. 12, previously captured the All Brandy Stakes on a firm course.
Can't Explain, the winner of the off-the-turf Wasted Tears at Gulfstream Park last time out, was nominated to both the Ladies and the $100,000 Distaff, a seven-furlong dash on the main track for fillies and mares that drew 18 nominees. Classy Coco was also nominated for the Distaff to defend her six-length victory last year.
The $100,000 Nursery, which attracted 22 nominations, and the $100,000 Lassie, which drew 16 nominations, will feature Maryland-sired 2-year-olds. The $50,000 Starter Handicap and the $50,000 Distaff Starter Handicap drew 14 and 11 nominations, respectively.

I hope he wins big. Then King may think about racing at 10. They are such a good pair!

you are correct about one thing. he isnt a has been. he is a never was been. MARYLAND MILLION DAY? thats like some serious shit, right? lolol. hopefully no one gets shot while attending the races there that day.
oh btw, ................GO RAVENS!!!! LOLOL

Jack’s In The Deck Upsets Ben’s Cat In Maryland Million Sprint Paulick Report
Longshot Jack’s in the Deck won a stretch battle with fan favorite Ben’s Cat to take the $100,000 Maryland Million Sprint Saturday at Laurel Park.
Ridden by Forest Boyce, Jack’s in the Deck took the lead at the top of the stretch but faced a stiff challenge from Ben’s Cat to his outside. The two dueled down the Laurel stretch, with Jack’s in the Deck coming out on top for his first stakes victory since 2011. D C Dancer finished third.
Final time for the six-furlong race was 1:10.74 after opening splits of :22.84 and :46.03.
M.E. Jones and trainer Robin L. Graham own Jack’s in the Deck, who was bred in Maryland by Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Bowman. The 6-year-old gelding is a son of Love of Money out of Thracian (Partner’s Hero).
This was the third year in a row Ben’s Cat has suffered a narrow defeat on Maryland Million day. The 9-year-old was the runner-up beaten a half-length in last year’s Maryland Million Turf and defeated by a neck in that same race in 2013.

calis with 1/4's backgrounds and used to the speedways created for their few and favored trainers really don't understand real thoro racetracks - sad
it was a great race, we thought he got there - forest is a good jock - love her - she did nothing wrong but was smart to float benny out on the turn - thanks to rg we had it -

At times it's best to ignore our resident Bad Boy. This is one the them!
We had a wonderful day. The renovations at Laurel are terrific. It's a very nice, very pretty track and grounds. And we didn't need tp as the lovely ladies room was well stocked and clean!!

And we didn't need tp as the lovely ladies room was well stocked and clean!! glad you had a good day RG. i agree, from what i have seen of it, laurel is a very pretty track. i have never said a bad word about its upkeep or appearance. unlike the other dump over there in md. dont really know about the location though. i hope you dont have to risk getting shot to get there like you do some tracks. however, appearance still doesnt make up for quality of competition. as long as laurel and its fans know their place on the ladder of racings tracks, its fine. but when some want to start comparing their racing to major players, thats where the ignorance kicks in. but for just spending a day at the track and enjoying yourself it is a good place to go.

There will be another for Ben's Cat this year. He really is a nice looking horse and doesn't seem to be "old"! I'm so glad we saw him. (going home in the morning). Wiz - we talked about this last night. Because you love to demean any opinions that differ from yours I have to chime in. I think you need to step back and try to be objective (you say you are but obviously not!) CA lost lot of players when the state mandated the switch to synthetic. That's changed and CA is slowly getting back. The state hasn't helped with purses either so there's no need for horses from the Midwest, south and east to ship there. Often short fields, few trainers and not many good sires for CA Bred races. CA is not racing on the level it used to.
You never answered the question as to how much you bet and follow SA. I rarely bet CA unless it's a big race.
That's my opinion and I know you will disagree but any personal slamming and insults will be deleted as we've all had enough!
Ben’s Cat ‘Very Bright’ Morning After Narrow Defeat At Laurel Paulick Report
Sunday morning breeder/owner/trainer King Leatherbury aptly described the disappointment he felt when Maryland’s living legend Ben’s Cat lost his stretch-long battle with Jack’s in the Deck in the Sprint.
“The agony of defeat, Jim McKay said it best,” said Leatherbury, recalling the words of the late ABC’s Wide World of Sports host and Maryland Million co-founder. “He certainly ran a nice race. He didn’t have any excuses.”
Although Ben’s Cat’s quest for a fourth Maryland Million victory and 31st overall win was thwarted by the Grade 2 winner Jack’s in the Deck, the 9-year-old gelding came out of his 52nd lifetime start in good order.
"He seems to be fine,” Leatherbury said. “He’s very bright this morning.”
Ben’s Cat will be pointed to the $200,000 Fabulous Strike at Penn National on Nov. 25. The son of Parker’s Storm Cat has won the six-furlong stakes on dirt the past three years.
“Every year I’ve won it,” Leatherbury said. “That’s the only thing left, basically.”

i bet santa anita as much as i have every other thoroughbred track in the country for the last 2 1/2 months. zero. but i watch it every day. i am back to watching qh tapes so that is my focus. but when i was playing before that, i would play the big days at other tracks and santa anita or del mar sporadically during the rest of the time. but what does that have t do with the subject? santa anita has been back to dirt now for like 4 years, possibly more. if those players are gone and havent come back yet, who is keeoing the handle up? is it magic? they dont need those shippers to come here as far as quality goes. yes it would be nice to have even bigger fields, but the fact is the horses that are here are simply better then other areas of the country, whether some want to admit it or not. look at it this way. you have basically a two track sampling to choose from here compared to hundreds of tracks throughout the rest of the country. yet between these two tracks, with lower purses then others, they still produce the majority of the big horses. you cant argue recent history. west coast horses have dominated when shipping elsewhere for tc races and tc prep races, as well as 2 year old races. plus they have had the top oldeer horses the last few years as well. why do you think that is? they certainly arent coming from maryland i know that.

am so glad benny's doing well - truly an amazing old guy - and healthy - king is a good example of a trainer - a horseman - not a pharmacist, not a $ is all that matters guy but a horse guy! -
as to the cali racing crap - the point was about Racing - not horses that train in cali (but are primarily KY breds - the big exception being chrome - who got lucky with so many injuries but still made his mark) everyone has their opinions and favorites and can bet w/e they want - as jon said elsewhere "better" is an OPINION - on any day in any race at any track. any horse entered can win
some care about ALL that race, not just G1 quality because it's the day to day horses that keep the sport going
nothing shabby about a horse questionable to survive who does, starts racing at 4, earns 2.5M and wins 58% of the time in good (some graded) races, not cheap claimers!
and there should be more "bens" because they attract a following - nope - prolly not biased curmudgeonly cali residents who bash everything not cali and make really stupid non factual statements, but nancy's right - best to ignore that stupidity and flat out nastiness -
