Horse Owned By CHRB Commissioner Tests Positive for Tranquilizer

The California Horse Racing Board has filed a complaint against trainer Tim Yakteen alleging violation of CHRB Rules 1843 (a), (b), (d) and 1844 (e)(l) pursuant to Rule 1887 after the Maddy Laboratory at UC Davis determined the urine sample collected from a horse in his care, Big Book, contained a metabolite of acepromazine in excess (259 NG/ML) of the regulatory threshold permitted for urine.
Acepromazine is a commonly used tranquilizer in horses. This is a Class 3 drug with a Category B penalty. Big Book, a daughter of Mr. Big owned and bred by George Krikorian, finished first in the $200,000 Fleet Treat Stakes at Del Mar on July 25. Krikorian is a member of the CHRB, having been appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown in 2013.
A hearing was scheduled earlier this week with CHRB stewards on the disqualification of Big Book and redistribution of the purse. A hearing for Yakteen is pending.
Kiss At Midnight – trained by Richard Baltas and owned by a partnership that includes William Marasa, Nancy Messineo, Richie Robershaw and Mark Rose – would become the official winner of the Fleet Treat Stakes, restricted to California-bred or California-sired 3-year-old fillies.
Yakteen, who worked as assistant to the late Charlie Whittingham and Bob Baffert before going out on his own in 2004, has won 155 races from 1,209 career starts for earnings of $6.3 million, according to Equibase.
He has one previous medication violation, an overage of phenylbutazone in 2014.
