Aided by an almost 9% increase in average field size and eight more turf races, pari-mutuel handle at the midway point of the 40-day Saratoga Race Course meeting is showing strong gains compared with the same period in 2014.
New York Racing Association statistics released Aug. 19 show total wagering on live racing at Saratoga through Aug. 15 was $319,814,639, up 17.6% from $272,034,037 for the first 20 days of last year's meet. That's a gain of more than $47.7 million and an average of $15,990,731 per program.
On-track handle, which includes wagering on Saratoga races at the other two NYRA facilities, Aqueduct Racetrack and Belmont Park and through NYRA Rewards, totaled $80,684,715 for the first 20 days of the meet, up 14.8% from $70,294,704 in 2014. Average daily on-track wagering of $4,034,236 is up from $3,514,735 in 2014.
There were 203 races, 101 of them on the grass, run through Aug. 15. In 2014 the numbers were 202 and 93, respectively.
The weather this year in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., so far has been cooperative for the race meet. Through Aug. 15 only seven races came off the turf versus 15 during the comparable period last year.
According to The Jockey Club Information Systems, average field size through 20 days was 8.71 horses per race, up 8.8% from 8 last year.
Purses are about even this year with 2014 numbers. Purses paid through 20 days totaled $18,990,320 (for a daily average of $949,516) versus $18,968,760 ($948,438) in 2014, according to TJCIS
