Wait For Me: Gates Open In Del Mar Race While Horse Still Loading by Scott Jagow Paulick Rep
Talk about being left at the gate. A horse in a race at Del Mar Sunday was only halfway into his stall when the gates flew open.
An assistant starter was still leading Admiral Jaxon into the outside post in a field of nine when starter John Lopez pushed the button to begin the third race. The assistant successfully scrambled out the front of the gate as the horse took off. Neither the horse nor the assistant was injured.
Stewards declared Admiral Jaxon, the 3-1 second choice in the $40,000 maiden claiming event, a nonstarter. As a result, the track refunded more than $300,000 in bets from various pools. Despite the horrible start, the 3-year-old gelding making his second start for trainer Jeff Mullins wound up finishing fifth. L’s Choice, the sixth-place 6-5 favorite, was moved up a place and awarded fifth-place money. A claim on Admiral Jaxon was also disallowed.
Stewards planned to meet with Lopez this week about the incident. See a video replay of what happened from various angles below.
