A wonderful actor. RIP
Actor, Horse Owner Omar Sharif Dies at 83 BloodHorse
Omar Sharif, the actor and horse owner known for his iconic roles in "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Dr. Zhivago," died from a heart attack July 10 at the age of 83 in Cario, Egypt, according to published reports.
Born in Egypt, Sharif's horses raced in Europe for decades and he was a frequent attendee at Longchamp on Prix de l' Arc de Triomphe (Fr-I) Day. His favorite racing venue was the summer meet at Deauville.
Sharif found recent success with multiple French group winner Don Bosco, an 8-year-old son of Barathea who won three conditions races this spring and most recently was third in a stakes June 29 at Nantes for David Smaga. His record includes 12 victories topped by the 2013 Prix du Muguet (Fr-II) and 2012 Prix Gontaut-Biron-Hong Kong Jockey Club (Fr-III) and Prix Perth (Fr-I).
Sharif raced horses at least as far back as the 1960s; his Dedini (Dedicate) won 1967 Prix de la Porte Maillot.
"I knew him from the days when I was in Egypt and we had a friendship, which lasted down through the years," Smaga told Racing Post. "He loved those victories with Don Bosco and he really came alive when he went racing. Before Don Bosco, we had a filly called Lixirova (Slickly), who won the (2009) Prix Miesque (Fr-III). When his horses won there was always a celebration.
"I had the opportunity to try and walk down the street with him in Egypt, and the crowds around him were too great. It was just impossible."
