Delaware Park Bans 2014 Leading Trainer Vazquez

Trainer Juan Vazquez, leading trainer at Delaware Park in 2014, has been banned from the Wilmington, Del., racetrack, according to Delaware Park President William Fasy.
“Juan Vazquez is no longer allowed on the grounds or to race here as of last week,” Fasy told the Paulick Report on Monday.
Asked if there was a specific incident that led to the ejection of Vazquez, Fasy said, “Yes, but I don’t want to get into any of the details.”
Vazquez last raced at Delaware Park June 24. On Saturday, Vazquez-trained Golden Rings was scratched by the stewards “upon the recommendation of management.”
No complaint has been filed with the Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission, said Fasy, who added that there was no specific time limit on the exclusion of Vazquez. Fasy said Vazquez could appeal to the track after an unspecified time had passed.
“It’s so bizarre. I don’t know who has it in for him, but somebody has it in for him,” said attorney Alan Pincus, who is representing Vazquez on separate ejections in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. “Delaware is one of those states where the track has common law rights written into statute and you’re not even entitled to a hearing. It’s a situation where you are not entitled to defend yourself.”
Pincus said Vazquez “says he didn’t do anything to anybody and doesn’t understand what it’s about.”
Earlier this year, the Maryland Jockey Club informed Vazquez it would not provide stabling or accept entries from him at Pimlico or Laurel Park. Vazquez received two separate ejection letters from Penn National racetrack in Pennsylvania – one in March that was overturned by the Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission and one in April (for allegedly offering a “gratuity” to a member of the racing office) that was upheld by the commission on June 9. Penn National-owned Charles Town in West Virginia also ejected Vazquez in March.
The ejections began after assistant trainer Hector Garcia – who was running the stable while Juan Vazquez was serving a 90-day suspension for being the aggressor in an altercation with jockey Trevor McCarthy – was suspended 13 months for four separate medication violations.
Vazquez, who has been stabling his horses at a private training center in Delaware, was the runaway leading trainer at Delaware Park in 2014, with 50 wins from 216 starters (19 wins ahead of Scott Lake in second place). He’s won with six of 29 starters at Delaware in 2015 and is 17 for 90 overall in North America.
An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that an April 2015 ejection of Juan Vazquez from Penn National was under appeal. The Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission on June 9 upheld the ejection.
