Roaming Deer In Presque Isle Infield Cause Monday Cancellation
by Emily White Paulick Report
Presque Isle Downs canceled live racing on Monday evening after the third race due to a group of deer roaming in the infield.
There were around five deer that were moving around the infield and occasionally onto the track, according to Presque Isle’s director of marketing Jennifer See.
“The safety of our jockeys and horses is a top priority,” said See. She mentioned that there had been no such situations like this at Presque Isle in the past.
Roaming animals have proven a safety hazard at other tracks. At Parx Racing in 2010, a group of chickens spooked a horse, causing a spill that resulted in the death of jockey Mario Calderon. And in 1989, two deer ran across the backstretch at Turfway Park, causing one horse to stumble and lose his rider.

Oh dear - Deer!!!
Presque Isle Alters Post Time to Combat Deer By Tom LaMarra BloodHorse
Presque Isle Downs & Casino will resume live racing July 1 with an earlier post time to mitigate the chances of deer interfering with the races.
The move came June 30 after officials at the Pennsylvania track consulted with Pennsylvania Game Commission officials on how to eradicate the deer that forced the cancellation of racing June 28-29 as well as parts of two programs the
previous week.
Todd Mostoller, executive director of the Pennsylvania Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association, said first post time will move from 5:25 p.m. EDT to 3:05 p.m. beginning Wednesday, and will remain at that time until the issue is resolved. In addition, training hours will switch from 7-11 a.m. to 6-9 a.m.
"We're moving post time to get the races done before dusk (when the deer emerge)," Mostoller said. "The new training hours will facilitate the contractors who will come in to remove foliage on the hill that parallels the backstretch, as well as in the infield."
Presque Isle also will heighten the fence that runs along the backstretch.
"We're taking this very seriously,'' Presque Isle vice president and general manager Jeff Favre told the Associated Press."The last thing we want is a jockey or horse to get hurt due to deer."
Mostoller said the track and horsemen are awaiting word from state wildlife officials on what action can be taken regarding the deer that have made track property their home. There also is a large forested area beyond the railroad tracks located not far from the backstretch.
