With the Triple Crown in the books, Belmont Park is preparing for its July 4 Stars and Stripes program and will continue offering it regular weekly events, including Breakfast at Belmont and Party at the Park.
The Stars and Stripes Festival, inaugurated last year, will feature six graded stakes including two grade I turf events for 3-year-olds: the $1.25 million Belmont Derby Invitational for males and the $1 million Belmont Oaks Invitational for fillies. Other stakes on the card are the $500,000 Dwyer Stakes (gr. III), $500,000 Suburban Handicap (gr. II), $400,000 Belmont Sprint Championship (gr. III), and $150,000 Victory Ride Stakes (gr. III).
The Breakfast at Belmont program, held weekends and holidays, began May 2 and extends through July 19, the weekend before racing shifts to Saratoga Race Course. The program is held on the track apron from 7-9:30 a.m. EDT, with free parking and admission and an $11 breakfast buffet.
The program wasn't held June 6, the day American Pharoah won the Belmont Stakes Presented by DraftKings (gr. I) to become the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years.
"Breakfast at Belmont is one of Long Island's best-kept secrets," said John Durso Jr., director of communications and public affairs for the New York Racing Association. "Racing fans of all ages can experience the history and pageantry of horse racing's grandest stage while enjoying a relaxing, fun morning in one of the nation's most scenic venues."
For many years Mary Ryan announced and narrated all of the training information to breakfast attendees, but she left NYRA last summer.
This year the event so far has attracted several groups, including nuns and parishioners from Little Sisters of the Poor in Queens Village and a local Boy Scout troop from New Hyde Park in Nassau County.
The Party at the Park events are scheduled for three consecutive Fridays: June 19, June 26, and July 3. Twilight racing programs will begin at 3 p.m. those days, with post-race concerts in the Belmont Backyard.
