Her Majesty The Queen will unveil the newly installed statue of undefeated Frankel shortly after the Queen Anne Stakes (Eng-I) on the June 16 Royal Ascot opening card.
Trained by the late Sir Henry Cecil for Prince Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms, Frankel retired unbeaten following a 14-race career in October 2012. His final race, the QIPCO Champion Stakes (Eng-I), and an 11-length romp in the 2012 Queen Anne were among one of five victories at Ascot for the champion son of Galileo who now stands at Juddmonte's Banstead Manor Stud near Suffolk, England.
The striking bronze statue created by sculptor Mark Coreth overlooks the parade ring facing the winners' enclosure. at Ascot Racecourse.
Among those who plan to attend the unveiling are Lady Cecil, widow of the late Sir Henry Cecil and now a successful trainer; Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager at Juddmonte; Douglas Erskine-Crum, chief executive of Juddmonte; and Coreth.
"Ascot played a special part in Frankel's career as five of his 14 wins came at the course," Lady Cecil said. "It is fitting that such a magnificent statue will stand at the course to celebrate his achievements. Mark Coreth has captured the presence, power, and strength of Frankel. I cannot imagine a more fitting or appropriate testament to his talent."
The statue is one of a set of four, with the others to be located at the National Museum of Horse Racing in Newmarket, York Racecourse, and Banstead Manor Stud.
"Prince Khalid is absolutely delighted that Her Majesty has consented to unveil this superb sculpture of Frankel by Mark Coreth," Grimthorpe said. "It is a wonderful likeness which has captured both his looks and his energy."
"This unveiling adds to a spectacular opening day at Royal Ascot," said Guy Henderson, chief executive at Ascot. "Frankel was the people's horse and much loved. It is entirely appropriate that his statue will be amongst the crowds who visit Ascot through the year, and looking at the winners' podium."
"It was an honor to be asked to create this sculpture of this extraordinary horse," Coreth said. "The creative process was a delight and the sculpture tries to capture the power and vitality of Frankel."
