Will this mean horses will be entered that wouldn't be in order to get bonus (although $250 isn't much!)? More coupled entries? Summer racing in FL has to compete with the big popular meets such as Saratoga and Del Mar so I guess handle drops. Do you bet FL in the summer?
Gulfstream Starter Bonus Tied to Field Size Bloodhorse
Gulfstream Park will offer horsemen a $250 starter bonus tied to field size beginning July 1.
Trainers will receive a $250 bonus in any races in which the field leaves the paddock with eight or more horses. The bonus will be in place until the summer meet ends Oct. 3 at the Florida track.
Gulfstream recently announced it will keep its Palm Meadows Training Center open to horsemen free of charge this summer and pay the costs for all horsemen who ship to Gulfstream to run from anywhere in the country.
"Our summer meet continues to grow due to our great fans and the support of horsemen from around the country," said P.J. Campo, vice president of racing for The Stronach Group and general manager at Gulfstream. "By keeping Palm Meadows open, helping horsemen with shipping costs, and offering a trainer's bonus, we want to show our commitment to the horsemen.
"We also want to continue building our summer program with competitive fields while maintaining an exciting racing program throughout the summer."

Isn't this sort of like some people complained about with respect to NY winter racing? Bigger purses encouraged trainers to enter sore or unfit horses.
Considering the (lack of) quality of the horses running during the old Calder summer meet and now the Gulfstream Park summer meet, they may wind up with a similar issue down there, maybe even worse. Trainers are likely to enter their horses just for the $250 bonus - trainers down there at that time of year are barely getting by with a string of cheap claimers.
