Terrible tune! (CC - start writing letters - It should be replaced) But I thought Wiz would enjoy LOL At least it's a good race in this clip.
Interesting history though.
"Maryland, My Maryland" is the official state song of the U.S. state of Maryland. The song is set to the tune of "Lauriger Horatius"[1] — better known as the tune of "O Tannenbaum" — and the lyrics are from a nine-stanza poem written by James Ryder Randall (1839–1908). While the words were penned in 1861, it was not until April 29, 1939, that the state's general assembly adopted "Maryland, My Maryland" as the state song.[2]
The song's words refer to Maryland's history and geography and specifically mentions several historical figures of importance to the state. The song calls for Maryland to fight the Union and was used across the South during the Civil War as a battle hymn.[3] It has been called America's "most martial poem."[4]
Due to its origin in support of the Confederacy, it includes lyrics that refer to President Lincoln as a "tyrant," "despot," and "Vandal," and to the Union as "Northern scum," as well as referring to the phrase "sic semper," which was the slogan later shouted by Marylander John Wilkes Booth while assassinating Lincoln.[5] For these reasons occasional attempts have been made to replace it as Maryland's state song,[6] but to date all such attempts have met with failure.[7]

my dad used to tear up when they came on the track for the derby and now i do also. but when they play this there isnt and wasnt much reaction. it doesnt mean anything. just like the racing the other 364 days a year in maryland.

It's a controversial song, too - was a battle song for the confederacy. I think at the Preakness they sing only the first couple of stanzas - the last stanza actually refers to the US / Union as "Northern scum"!
I wish they'd go back to the song "Sidewalks of New York" for the Belmont Stakes. It just hasn't been the same once they went to "New York, New York", and now they even do something else.
They used to have a band/orchestra, I think of retired firement or policemen, set up on the apron up-stretch from the winners' circle with ropes around them. They played all through the afternoon between races, stopping only when the horse for each race came out on the track. It was a big Belmont tradition, now no longer.
There's a superstition that there won't ever be another Triple Crown winner until they bring back that song!

i agree. jay z and now whoever sings the new one dont belong in the tc races. i mean really, where is the tradiotion in that? you have the derby and preakness both playing songs that are like 200 years old and linked together with a race as the tc where they play songs by a rapper?
