is it still because all the major barns are out of town i wonder?
im being completely sincere here now when i ask this question to anyone willing to offer an answer. if new york offers the best horses and purses, why is it no one wants to go there to run? its well documented by others here why ca. has short fields. the reasons supposedly being low purses and unsafe conditions according to some. but if these things are so much better in new york, then why is it they cant get more horses, yet other tracks with bloated purses for their level of horses do?

wiz, good to see you!
This stuff happens everywhere these days, not just in California or New York. Trainers don't run their horses as often as they used to, so there are less horses available for stakes races and even overnight or claiming races. Even some of the cheap $5K claiming tracks are cutting back on dates and races/day to beef up their field sizes. Some are even filling their cards with state-bred races.
Not an east/west thing, but I just read that Beholder is out of Saturday's Grade 1 Vanity. That leaves only four entrants.

Not an east/west thing, but I just read that Beholder is out of Saturday's Grade 1 Vanity. That leaves only four entrants. and thats what belmont should be doing also. i hear people in hear bragging about how belmont still runs 5 or 6 days a week like its a good thing. why? if it makes the cards better then cutback to 4. but do they do that? no, they continue on running bad cards and it ruins the cards on the good days also. i know it is that way in ca. also, but like i said, at ca. has the excuse of not having the money to offer that these other tracks do due to slot money. there is no reason belmont/ aqueduct/ saratoga should be in the same spot. but they are, and again i ask, why? they should be the one racing jurisdiction that doesnt have these problems. do people just not like going to that area? is it the shitty weather? is ith crooked politicians? im not being a smartass here. im really trying to figure this out.
also one reason i think for the lack of entrants in the big races at all tracks, that being ca., ny, and all other tracks suffering from small fields in their marquee and even smaller stakes races, is because of the bloated purses in the other races they card. horses should be rewarded for winning races and accomplishing things in their career. the better they do, the more money they should be competing for. back in the old days for instance, 20 years ago or so, a race like the santa anita handicap or santa anita derby out here, or say the jockey club gold cup or belmont stakes in new york, had big purses. already up to a million dollars. but the supporting races on the card had no where near that much in purses and neither did the preps leading up to these races. it gave horsemen something to shoot for once or twice a meet to make the big score. it attracted huge fields because that was your one chance. now the prep races and undercard races have purses that are percentage wise alot closer to the big races then they should be. plain and simple, as i have said before, there is just to much money floating around out there, enabling owners and trainers to shop around and avoid the best competition while still making damn near as much money as they would if they ran in the biig races. and dont even get me started on maiden races. sorry, but mdn. special weights should not have higher purses then your weekday overnight stakes do. that is a F*ing joke.

As per usual your comments have NOTHING to do with this topic they dont? seemed like a reasonable explanation to me, even though i may not 100% agree with it.
do we really need to start in again? get over it for F*s sake!!

The Jockey Club has a lot of statistics regarding starts, horses, etc.
This goes all the way back to 1950. The column headings didn't paste so well, but they are:
Year #Starters (active horses) #Races #Starts (total of ALL horses and starts) Avg. Field Size Avg. Starts/Runner
The last column is very indicative of the trend over the last couple of decades:
In 1950 there were 244,343 starts by 22,388 horses, or almost 11 (10.91) starts PER horse average.
Last year there were 343,397 starts by 55,198 horses, with the average starts per horse down to 6.22.
If each horse that raced last year had only one more start over the 12 months, the field size overall would have gone up from 7.69 to 8.69, to a field size similar to back around 1992.
1950 22,388 26,932 244,343 9.07 10.91 1955 25,924 31,757 287,775 9.06 11.10 1960 29,798 37,661 337,060 8.95 11.31 1965 37,386 47,335 406,646 8.59 10.88 1970 47,778 56,676 488,326 8.62 10.22 1975 58,816 68,210 601,780 8.82 10.23 1980 64,506 68,243 593,849 8.70 9.21 1985 82,548 75,687 683,667 9.03 8.28 1990 89,716 79,971 712,494 8.91 7.94 1991 86,937 79,303 693,614 8.75 7.98 1992 83,404 77,712 669,967 8.62 8.03 1993 78,740 72,342 618,974 8.56 7.86 1994 74,955 70,699 587,404 8.31 7.84 1995 72,399 68,248 559,669 8.20 7.73 1996 70,450 64,388 534,861 8.31 7.59 1997 69,056 63,487 520,880 8.20 7.54 1998 68,697 61,293 500,710 8.17 7.29 1999 68,678 60,182 493,926 8.21 7.19 2000 69,569 60,872 493,682 8.11 7.10 2001 71,278 60,738 496,604 8.18 6.97 2002 72,825 59,896 495,228 8.27 6.80 2003 73,918 59,001 489,503 8.30 6.62 2004 74,206 58,858 487,428 8.28 6.57 2005 72,780 57,495 469,644 8.17 6.45 2006 72,729 56,902 462,937 8.14 6.37 2007 72,966 56,361 460,492 8.17 6.31 2008 72,638 55,069 450,095 8.17 6.20 2009 71,662 54,121 446,196 8.24 6.23 2010 68,235 50,918 417,192 8.19 6.11 2011 64,625 49,794 400,408 8.04 6.20 2012 61,863 49,381 389,568 7.89 6.30 2013 58,138 46,814 367,567 7.85 6.32 2014 55,198 44,640 343,397 7.69 6.22

It happens. ALL tracks have short fields. Not rehashing this debate. Not many 3 yr olds left that didn't run in Derby (or elsewhere) that would need this Belmont prep,
Beholder spikes fever, out of Vanity Brisnet
Two-time champion Beholder (Henny Hughes) will miss her highly anticipated showdown with Warren's Veneda (Affirmative) in Saturday's Vanity H. (G1) after spiking a fever, according to published reports Thursday. "She's fighting something, so she's out of the race," Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella told Blood-Horse's Jeremy Balan.
Mandella revealed that Beholder's temperature rose to 102.6 degrees, and blood work found her white blood cell count was elevated.
Last fall, Beholder had also been ruled out of a title defense in the Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) due to illness. The Spendthrift Farm colorbearer did not reappear until the April 10 Santa Lucia, where she hacked up by 3 3/4 lengths.
Now five years old, Beholder has compiled a record of 16-11-3-0, $3,416,600.
In Beholder's absence, Warren's Veneda will be an overwhelming favorite against just three rivals in the 1 1/8-mile Vanity at Santa Anita.

Toad pulled the 'ol bait n switch
4 was 4/5 runs 3rd while "other" half of entry wins paying $11.40 just another reason why this sport is a disgrace.
Results: 2-3-4

This happens all the time at all tracks when trainers have more than 1 entry. It's been discussed on both HRTV and TVG where the hosts usually say play the one not favored.
