wth's the deal with no insurance? jockeys have he highest risk as athelete - screw Parx - bettors should boycott
Some Parx Riders Plan to Not Accept Mounts Bloodhorse
A dispute between jockeys and management at Parx Racing has led some riders to inform the track they will not accept mounts on or after March 19 unless Parx unconditionally guarantees they are covered by the Parx on-track insurance policy.
According to a March 16 statement from The Jockeys' Guild, more than 50 jockeys have notified Parx in writing of their intentions not to accept mounts unless the dispute is resolved. According to the guild, at issue is efforts by Parx to have riders sign a letter releasing the track from liability; though the agreement has been amended, the guild is advising members not to sign.
The Pennsylvania track has told riders who choose to not sign the agreement they will not be included in the track's catastrophic insurance coverage of up to $1 million for on-track racing injuries. The guild said riders who do not sign the agreement would lose that coverage after March 18.
The guild opposes tying the agreement to the catastrophic insurance.

WHAT JOCKEYS DO IS VERY DANGEROUS. THEY ALSO ARE HANDSOMELY REWARDED FOR TAKING SUCH DANGER. WHY SHOULD THEY BE ABLE TO SUE THE OWNERS OF A TRACK IF THEY ARE INJURED ? PARX SAID THEY WILL PROVIDED COVERAGE OF UP TO 1 MILLION AND THAT'S IT. CERTAINLY SOME OF THOSE JOCKEYS CAN PUT MONEY TO THE SIDE JUST IN CASE SOMETHING HAPPENS. BUT INSTEAD THEY WOULD RATER BE GREEDY AND NOT TAKE PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY.

ONCE AGAIN IT ALL GOES BACK TO RACE DAY MEDICATIONS. JOCKEYS KNOW THAT A HORSE MAYBE IN PAIN BUT THAT PAIN IS MASKED BY A VARIETY OF DRUGS. IF AMERICA BANDED RACE DAY DRUGS LIKE THE REST OF THE CIVILIZED WORLD THE RISK THAT JOCKEYS TAKE WILL BE LOWERED. IF A HORSE COMES TO THE PADDOCK IN PAIN IT WOULD BE UP TO THAT JOCKEY TO ACCEPT THE MOUNT. JOCKEYS HAVE A DANGEROUS JOB BUT THAT DANGER IS GREATLY INCREASED WHILE DRUGS ARE IN THE MIX.

no argument re drugs - but why should PARX jocks give up their rights - especially when other tracks are not doing the same thing? 1M isn't really that much if a jock becomes disabled

WHAT ONE MAN WONT DO ANOTHER MAN WILL. AMERICA IS ALL ABOUT MONEY. OUTSIDE OF NY. PARX IS THE ONLY PLACE IN THE MID ATLANTIC WITH BIG PURSES. I'M SURE THE NEED FOR MONEY WILL OVERRIDE THEIR MORALS AND THEY WILL RETURN BACK TO PARX. ONLY A MATTER OF TIME.

That's true Key but what will PARX do when no riders are left? They do risk their lives every time they get on a horse. Maybe PARX should reduce it's purses and increase it's coverage of jocks?

THAT'S LIKE SAYING AMERICA SHOULD REDUCE ITS DEFENSE BUDGET AND USE THE MONEY TO ERADICATE HOMELESSNESS IN AMERICA. IN THEORY IT MAYBE THE RIGHT THING TO DO BUT IT'S HIGHLY UNLIKELY. THE MONIES ARE ALREADY ALLOCATED FOR RACING. IT'S NOT JUST SITTING IN A FUND TO BE USED SPARINGLY. JOCKEYS CAN ALWAYS GO OUT AND GET THEIR OWN PERSON INSURANCE BUT VERY FEW COMPANIES WILL ENSURE THEM. NOBODY IS FORCING THOSE RIDERS TO RIDE. PARX IS COVERING ITS SELF. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT. AS FAR AS JOCKEY GO DON'T MIND THE BS. THERE WILL ALWAYS BE JOCKEYS TO FILL RACES. NO JOCKEY WILL LEAVE THAT TYPE OF MONEY SITTING ON THE TABLE.
