casinos have bailed out many tracks but are contributing to racing's decline - what wil happen when the track deals are up? guess it will depend on local politics
Casino Planned at Former Michigan Racetrack AP
Plans are moving forward for a casino at the former Great Lakes Downs horse racing track near Muskegon in western Michigan.
The Little River Band of Ottawa Indians announced the week of Feb. 22 that it filed an application with the Bureau of Indian Affairs to take 60 acres of land into trust for the $180 million casino and economic development project. The approval process could take years.
The tribe is proposing a casino, restaurants, and a 220-room hotel at the former Great Lakes Downs in Muskegon County's Fruitport Township, 30 miles northwest of Grand Rapids. Plans call for a project designed to jumpstart the local economy and boost tribal government services.
Formerly part of the Magna Entertainment Corp. family of racetracks, Great Lakes Downs closed in 2007 and the Little River Band purchased the property in 2008 for $5 million. The tribe currently operates the Manistee's Little River Casino Resort.
