Equine herpesvirus claims filly at Santa Anita It’s a horseman’s worst fear, and tragically it happened at Santa Anita this week. A 3-year-old non-raced filly, My Sugar Sugar, trained by Eddie Truman, was euthanized after developing a highly contagious and sometimes fatal equine herpesvirus-1, or EHV-1. Diagnostic tests at the CAHFS Laboratory at UC Davis confirmed that My Sugar Sugar was EHV-1 positive. Thus far there have been no other reported cases, but horsemen at Santa Anita have been advised to be extra vigilant and to immediately notify the CHRB veterinarian if any of their horses show signs of the neurological disorder. Equine herpesvirus-1 can cause miscarriages in mares or cause severe upper respiratory infections and neurological problems in infected horses. In many cases, a horse will be infected and merely develop a nasal discharge, but then recover. The incubation period after contracting the virus is four to seven days. Horsemen at Santa Anita are now on high alert to the disease. The most recent cases of the virus in horses occurred in Florida last week with horses that are at a jumping show at Ocala, Fla., and as many as five horses have been diagnosed in Cache County in Utah in recent days. None of the cases are believed to be linked. www.utsandiego.com/news/2013/mar/07/equine-herpesvirus-claims/Also at DRF: www.drf.com/news/santa-anita-filly-euthanized-after-contracting-equine-herpesvirus
