ARCADIA, Calif. - Eblouissante, a half-sister to 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta, has been retired from racing and will be bred to one of England’s leading stallions in coming months.
Trainer John Shirreffs said on Friday that Eblouissante left his stable at Santa Anita early Tuesday for Kentucky, where she will be in quarantine before departing for Europe. Owned by Ian Banwell, Eblouissante will be bred to Oasis Dream or Frankel this year.
Eblouissante won 2 of 7 starts and earned $78,550. She finished last of seven in the Paseana Stakes at a mile at Santa Anita on Jan. 15 in her final start.
“I think she was really special,” Shirreffs said. “It didn’t work out on the racetrack for her. I think she’ll be a great mother.”
By Bernardini out of Vertigineux, by Kris S., Eblouissante was bred by Eric Kronfeld and won her first two starts for him amidst considerable hype in late 2012 and early 2013. She never won again. Eblouissante was last of six in the Grade 3 Shuvee Handicap at Saratoga in July 2013 after becoming upset in the gate.
“It was a little bit frustrating,” Shirreffs said of Eblouissante’s race career. “I think the incident at Saratoga changed her situation when she flipped in the gate there.”
Last year, Eblouissante finished second in an allowance race at Santa Anita, but was well-beaten in her final three starts.
Banwell acquired Eblouissante for $2.1 million at the 2013 Keeneland November breeding stock sale through a dispersal of Kronfeld’s racing and breeding holdings. Kronfeld died in May 2013.
The two stallions being considered for Eblouissante are among Europe’s finest.
Frankel, a 7-year-old by Galileo, was unbeaten in 14 races from the ages of 2 to 4 in 2010 and 2012 and was a champion each year. Considered one of the finest racehorses in history, Frankel stands for approximately $188,000. His oldest foals are yearlings this year. Last year, his weanlings were widely sought after at auctions in Europe.
Oasis Dream, a 15-year-old by Green Desert, stands for approximately $113,000. He was a three-time winner of Group 1 sprints at five and six furlongs as a 2-and 3-year-old in 2002 and 2003 and has become one of England’s top sires. Oasis Dream is the sire of Charming Thought, the winner of the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes in October.
