This vote was a referendum on Lasix. Violette - I like him as a trainer is pro-lasix. He won. Enough said.
Violette Wins Third Term as NYTHA President Bloodhorse
In perhaps the most contentious election in the history of the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association, trainer Rick Violette Jr. was re-elected president despite a strong bid by owner Terry Finley.
The results were announced the evening of Dec. 2. The vote totals weren't released, but according to sources it was neck-and-neck after 600 of the about 1,200 ballots cast were counted.
Violette was re-elected to his third full term as president. Incumbent owner directors Mike Shanley and Steve Zorn also were re-elected, with Joseph Appelbaum, Tina Marie Bond, and Jack Brothers filling the three additional owner director positions, according to the New York THA.
Incumbent trainer directors Patrick Kelly, Linda Rice, and Richard Schosberg were re-elected and will be joined by Jimmy Ferraro and Leah Gyarmati on the board, which is comprised of five owner directors and five trainer directors.
The election attracted interest from other horsemen's groups in the United States, some of which issued public endorsements.
The New York THA represents horsemen at Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park, and Saratoga Race Course, which are operated by the New York Racing Association. Horsemen at New York's other Thoroughbred track, Finger Lakes Gaming & Racing, are represented by the Finger Lakes Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association.
