New Jersey: Attorneys Claim Monmouth’s Future ‘Dire’ if Sports Wagering Not Allowed Paulick Report
Attorneys arguing in support of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s proposal to allow sports betting at Monmouth Park painted a bleak picture for the racetrack should the professional sports leagues succeed in a lawsuit to block the plans.
In the hearing held on Thursday, U.S. District Court Judge Michael Shipp said that he expects to rule on a request for an injunction against sports betting brought by the leagues within a day, according to a report in USA Today. In an October hearing, Shipp issued a temporary restraining order against the state, which is set to expire Friday.
Monmouth Park had planned to start taking sports bets on Oct. 26. Attorney Ronald Riccio, representing track management, told the judge that the delay has been threatening the track’s financial viability and development plans.
“The business of Monmouth Park is at standstill now because the revenue we thought we’d be able to generate with sports betting isn’t coming in,” Riccio said during the hearing.
When lawyers representing the leagues contended that there would be no hardship if sports betting weren’t allowed, Riccio stated, “It’s a domino effect, your honor. If Monmouth Park closes, the New Jersey equine industry is as good as dead and the open areas and open space that is protected by the equine industry, that’s going to go down the tubes.”
