Penn National: Jockey Misjudges Finish Line… By Seven Furlongs PR by Scott Jagow
It’s fair to say rider Julio A. Hernandez won’t be adding Saturday’s 2nd race at Penn National to his highlight reel.
It’s not that Hernandez chose the wrong finish line – it was the correct one — unfortunately for him, however, the race still had another lap to go.
Hernandez reportedly got the mount on 4-year-old Pennsylvania bred, Big Feat, because the jockey that was supposed to ride, Victor Carrasco, was late arriving from Laurel Park. Hernandez was then assigned to the 25-1 longshot by trainer Elizabeth Merryman for the allowance event featuring a field of eight going 1 1/2 miles on the turf.
Hernandez, a fairly seasoned rider with more than $2.7 million in earnings from 2,141 starts, seems to have missed that last part about the distance.
He did what he was supposed to do early, breaking alertly and getting an easy lead, but what happened next makes this one of the stranger races you’ll ever see. Watch below.

Years ago Jorge (not John) Velazquez misjudged the finish line by 1-1/8 mile. The Display Handicap used to be run at 2-1/4 miles, twice around the main track at Aqueduct. He was riding the lead horse as he crossed the finish line the first time and stood up, easing the horse. He wasn't able to get his horse back into stride before he was passed by at least one other horse, and wound up losing the race. If I remember correctly he was riding Sigmund Sommer's Paraje, who won the race three years in a row, and was a huge favorite.
He was bombarded with boos when he returned to unsaddle his horse.

No, the winning jockey was Frank Lovato, Jr., and after I posted I realized that it wasn't Paraje, either. I found an article from the Schenectady Gazette (!!!) about it. It was in 1985. I had the jockey right, but that's all. The favorite was an entry of Moro and In The Ruff. The horse was Southern Sultan, the second choice, and he finished sixth. It's on page 15 at this link: news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1917&dat=19860101&id=zQkhAAAAIBAJ&sjid=UHIFAAAAIBAJ&pg=5251,132138
