Street Cry, Darley's leading sire whose progeny included Zenyatta and classic winner Street Sense , has been euthanized after succumbing to complications relating to a neurological condition. The son of Machiavellian was 16.
"Street Cry epitomized everything that Darley and Godolphin aim to achieve—he was bred by Sheikh Mohammed in Ireland, excelled at the very highest level on the racecourse in Dubai and the U.S., and then became the lynchpin of our stallion operations in both America and Australia." said Sheikh Mohammed's bloodstock adviser John Ferguson. "His contribution to the breed has been significant and we have been so fortunate to have him. He will be sorely missed by everyone."
The stallion who stood at Darley Jonabell near Lexington had been shuttled to Australia for the Southern Hemisphere season that began Sept. 1. Darley Australia had said Sept. 5 that the son of Machiavellian was suffering from lameness and was not covering mares as scheduled.
The Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) and Stephen Foster Handicap (gr. I) winner ranks 17th on the North American general sire list for 2014.
Among his 17 grade I winners in the Northern Hemisphere to date are 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta, who earned $7.3 million while winning 19 of 20 starts, with one second; Street Sense , who won the 2007 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) and stands at Darley and Darley Australia; and Street Boss , a two-time grade I-winning sprinter who also stands at Darley and Darley Australia.
Additional North American grade I winners for Street Cry included New Year's Day , Victor's Cry, and Seventh Street.
According to The Jockey Club Information Systems, from nine crops of racing age Street Cry has been represented by progeny that have earned more than $84.3 million worldwide, including six champions, 49 graded stakes winners and 78 total stakes winners.
Street Cry's group I winners in Australia include Shocking, Whobegotyou, and Long John.
