Closing weekend of the 2012 Los Alamitos Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred racing season promises to be brighter than ever, as the Orange County oval will conduct special daytime racing on the weekend of December 21 through 23 with a first post of 2 p.m. (Pacific) each day.
The post time switch will make Los Alamitos Race Course the only live racing conducted in Southern California on Friday, December 21, Saturday, December 22 and Sunday, December 23. Betfair Hollywood Park will wrap up its Autumn meeting on Sunday, December 16 while Santa Anita Race Park opens its meet on Wednesday, December 26.
TVG, America’s Horseracing Network, will be onsite at Los Alamitos to provide morning television coverage of racing from around the country leading up to a special daytime broadcast of “The Quarters” starring host Mike Joyce, analyst Dave Weaver and handicapping expert Les Onaka.
“I am excited about the opportunity to showcase Quarter Horse racing at Los Alamitos Race Course to a nationwide daytime simulcast and television audience,” said Ed Allred, the owner of Los Alamitos Race Course.
The racing action at Los Alamitos will be highlighted by a trio of Quarter Horse stakes races. The 350-yard A Ransom Handicap for 3-year-olds will be the featured event on Friday, December 21, while the 400-yard First Down Dash Handicap for 3-year-olds and upward will be the main event on Saturday, December 22. The meet’s final day of racing on Sunday, December 23 will see 10 top 3-year-olds competing in the $200,000 estimated Grade 1 Southern California Derby at 400 yards. El Aguila Real, a two-time Grade 1 winner in 2012, was the impressive winner of Southern California Derby last year. Los Alamitos will also card competitive Thoroughbred racing throughout closing weekend on December 21-23 headed by races with $20,000 purses for $5,000 claimers at 4 ½ furlongs.
The track’s wagering menu will be headed by its popular early and late Pick Fours. The Los Alamitos early Pick Fours have average daily pools of over $110,000, while its late Pick Fours average over $70,000. For more information, please visit www.losalamitos.com or call 714-820-2690.
