Funniest Horse Racing Calls in History AmWager site
If you enjoy America’s first sports spectacle, than you probably have a favorite horse racing announcer. Being a horse racing announcer is tough work. Their job is to identify the positions of various racehorses during the race as well as point out any sudden moves made by them. More or less, you have to be able to talk really fast and know your stuff when it comes to the sport.
A good announcer, or race caller, can add excitement to any event. He or she can also aid those who can’t actually see what’s going on. A good sense of humor and perfect diction doesn’t hurt either. Chic Anderson and Dave Johnson are instantly recognizable announcers throughout the sport and often imitated by comedians. Now, enough talking; let’s watch four of the funniest horse racing calls in history!
ARRRRR The first video took place at Saratoga Race Course back in 2008, by announcer Tom Durkin. Durkin, a New York race caller, is often known for his booming voice and hilarious embellishments. In this particular race, the horse that comes from behind is named ARRRRR, and Durkin makes for one amusing call.
THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID Now, anyone who watches “The Office” will know this phrase by heart. In 2009 at Hawthorne Racecourse, That’s What She Said comes from behind for a dramatic win. Michael Scott would be proud.
MY WIFE KNOWS EVERYTHING In 2011, at Monmouth Park racetrack, announcer Larry Collmus called two horses competing neck to neck, one with the named Mywifenosevrything and the other Thewifedoesntknow. This race made for a hilarious and exciting finish. As any good husband can attest, the wife who knows everything won in the end.
DOREMIFASOLLATIDO This last comical clip took place at Belmont Park in 2008. This is probably my favorite Durkin moment. When a horse called Doremifasolatido broke its’ maiden and Durkin sang the notes of his name (literally).

last time I looked katt Williams and carlos mencia weren't race callers, and if its comedy you want, mirahmadi is funnier and more talented then durkin. trevor letrs you know whats happening in the race. durkin lets you know that alzheimers sets in earlier in some then others.

Lets you know what happens? They went an eighth of a mile and only one of the 12 horses was mentioned. Three sixteenths and only three horses were mentioned. Five eighths of a mile into the race and only half the field were mentioned. I don't think the ultimate winner of the race was even mentioned until halfway around the first turn.
And of course we have this famous one - when did he realize that Street Sense was in the race, and when did he realize he was in front?

Only if you can understand him. And so far, the few races I've watched at Del Mar, he's made a lot of mistakes. His voice is also grating and very unpleasant to listen to. Miramahdi does imitations which are very good but that's totally different than being creative on the spot as a race unfolds. Neither Denman or Frank have Tom's brain power and wit.

I JUST WATCHED THIS AGAIN AND IT IS NOT EVEN A BAD CALL OTHER THEN HIS OBVIOUS DISAPPOINTMENT THAT SHE DIDNT WIN.WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT HE CALLED THE ENTIRE FIELD AND WHERE THEY WERE 2 OR 3 TIMES AND AS REACENTLY AS ON THE FINAL TURN. AFTER THAT THERE WAS NO NEED TO CALL THE OTHERS BECAUSE THEY WERE NO LONGER RELAVENT OR IN THE RACE. BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, LIKE I SAID, DURKIN GIVES BAD CALLS ON A AILY BASIS. YOU HAVE TO GO BACK 4 OR 5 YEARS TO NITPICK THROUGH TREVORS CALLS TO FIND ONES TO BITCH ABOUT. AND YES THE STREET SENSE CALL WAS BAD. HE LOST HIM AND DIDNT PICK HIM UP UNTIL IT WAS TO LATE AND HE LOOKED BAD, BUT ONCE AGAIN, YOUR GOING BACK HOW FAR TO FIND THESE TWO EXAMPLES? AND WERE TALKING 12 AND 14 HORES FIELDS. DURKIN GETS LOST IN A 5 HORSE RACE.

MAYBE ITS YOUR HEARING OR YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE? I UNDERSTAND HIM FINE. BRAIN POWER AND WIT? IS THAT WHAT THEY CALL SENILTY NOW A DAYS?

The "Classic" call was a horrible one. Like I said, the only horse he mentioned until the leaders passed the 1/8 pole was Zenyatta, then he called the two leading horses, Espoir City with Quality Road second, and then called "Haynesfield a close up fifth" as they passed the finish line the first time. What happened to the third and fourth horses? And Blame was first mentioned on the turn, about 3/8 into the race. The stretch call was a ridiculous nightmare!

but that's only your opinion because you weren't a zenyite. I wasn't either. but its not as if it I was a botched call. he didn't screw up. you may not have liked it, but plenty of people did. that was who the public was interested in, plain and simple. as much as I didn't like that horse, know she did a lot for racing and brought in fans. that's what they were there to see so that's what he gave them.

He DID screw up that call! He even admitted it after the race. Very unprofessional. And BTW, your biased opinion of Tom is as you said to George - "Your Opinion." He's a better caller but Denman's grating voice is almost as irritating as Grunder's!
