San Clemente draws competitive field of 12
Brisnet
Diversy Harbor will do battle with Sheza Smoke Show while British invader Sandiva adds some international flair to Saturday's Grade 2, $200,000 San Clemente Handicap on Del Mar's opening weekend. The one-mile turf contest drew a field of 12 sophomore fillies and shares the card with the $90,000 Osunitas Stakes, which will send an overflow field of 14 distaffers 1 1/16 miles on the green.
Diversy Harbor will be cutting back to eight furlongs following her nice rallying second in the 1 1/4-mile American Oaks last out at Santa Anita on May 31. The Tom Proctor-trained daughter of Curlin captured her initial pair of starts, including the China Doll, to begin her career and sophomore campaign, and has placed in three subsequent graded efforts.
The bay filly was a length second in the Providencia on April 5, returned a month later to fill the third spot by that same margin in the Honeymoon and was given a brief rest following her American Oaks run last out. Mike Smith was aboard for the latter race and retains the mount on Saturday as Diversy Harbor seeks a return to the winner's circle.
Sheza Smoke Show is a bit inconsistent, dropping her opening two races before taking the next pair for trainer Peter Eurton. The Wilko filly finished fifth to Diversy Harbor in the China Doll, was given a near four-month layoff, and returned June 28 with a rallying score in the Senorita at a mile on Santa Anita's turf. She actually earned a career-best 92 BRIS Speed rating for that effort, better than Diversy Harbor's career best of 88, and keeps top jock Joe Talamo in the irons.
Sandiva comes from the shedrow of trainer Michael McCarthy off a run in the Coronation Cup at Royal Ascot. The chestnut lass finished fifth that day, beaten just 2 1/4 lengths, following a ninth-placing in the English One Thousand Guineas. Winner of the Nell Gwyn and Prix du Calvados, a pair of Group 3s, the daughter of Footstepsinthesand will make her U.S. debut in the San Clemente with Martin Garcia holding the reins.
Istanford, like Sheza Smoke Show, appears to be inconsistent but will be tough if she's on her game Saturday. The Mike Stidham-trained Istan sophomore entered 2014 unbeaten on turf in two tries, but didn't return to the green until March at Tampa Bay Downs when she saw her perfect grass mark broken in a second-place effort in the Florida Oaks. She once again proved her dislike for synthetic with a well-beaten 11th in Keeneland's Ashland, before switching back to turf for her past three races -- a second in the Edgewood, a win against the boys in the Arlington Classic and a seventh in the Regret. Rafael Bejarano has the call.
Concave returns to the grass on Saturday for the first time since breaking her maiden debut at Hollywood Park last July. The Doug O'Neill trainee was 3 1/2 lengths the best in that 5 1/2-furlong test, and would go on to take the Sorrento and finish third in the Del Mar Debutante on Del Mar's synthetic Polytrack. The Colonel John filly's best finish in four starts since was a third in the Delta Downs Princess on the dirt. Mario Gutierrez has piloting duties as Concave tries to get back to form on the turf.
Blue Norther heroine Sushi Empire could offer some value in the exotics is she rebounds off a fading sixth in the Senorita last out. The bay daughter of Empire Maker filled that same spot in the China Doll, but in between recorded a couple of nice placings in an optional claimer and the Ultrafleet. She also ran third over good turf in the Miesque last November at Hollywood Park and brings Corey Nakatani along for the ride.
Morning Fix is 1-0-2 from three turf tries and owns Speed numbers on par with the top runners in this field. She might show up in the top three under Elvis Trujillo, as could My Conquestadory. That Mark Casse charge captured her racing debut in the Summer Stakes last September going a mile on Woodbine's green, shipped to Keeneland and switched to the Polytrack for a win in the Alcibiades, and closed out her juvenile campaign with a fourth-placing in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita. The Artie Schiller filly has made just one start this season, caught in the final strides to be a nose second in Woodbine's Selene on the Polytrack in mid-May, and returns to action with Victor Espinoza aboard.
The San Clemente field is completed by American Oaks fourth Tiz the Key, Delta Downs Princess winner Tepin, stakes heroine Miss Machiavelli and dual stakes-placed Tiz Kissable.
Three races before the San Clemente, Premier Steps will lead out the field for the Osunitas. The Footstepsinthesand four-year-old captured an optional claimer in March before running third in the Wilshire and fifth in the Gamely in her past two. Proctor will give Drayden Van Dyke a leg up on the bay miss as she tries to add a second stakes win to her resume.
Also lining up for the Osunitas are dual stakes victress Dancingtothestars, multiple Grade 3-placed stakes heroine Moone's My Name and two-time Group 3 queen Beatrice, who is making her U.S. debut in this spot. Spanish champion Pearlside and multiple stakes winner Need You Now are listed as also-eligible in the 14-horse field.
