Dooley would be great! Imbriale - NO!!
Last call for Tom Durkin Bill Finley ESPN
When Saratoga opens Friday it will be the beginning of the end of Tom Durkin's announcing career. He will call his last race at Saratoga on Aug. 31, the day before the meet ends, and then enter into retirement. Durkin has been the Secretariat of race callers and no one can hope to bring to the microphone the color, the wit, the flare and the accuracy he's provided New York racing fans since 1990. He was more than just an announcer. He is a personality.
There's been little word on who will be handed the difficult task of replacing Durkin. Two top candidates have to be John Imbriale and John Dooley. Either one would be an excellent choice.
Imbriale has been Durkin's able backup for years and is a fine announcer in his own right. Since he's already retired once from NYRA before being brought back, he may not be a long-term solution. But that doesn't mean that he can't man the announcer's booth for a couple of years.
Dooley, the announcer at Arlington and Fair Grounds, is native of Staten Island, has called races in New York in the past and has developed into one of the better announcers in the sport. He's a perfect fit for the job.

Uh oh.....
In the beginning Dooley was very good. He filled in at Aqueduct during winter months for a couple of years, then moved out to Thistledown for a few years, then on to Arlington and down to the Fair Grounds when CDI bought that track.
Now he's gotten too kitchy, too cute, with too many dumb expressions, just like all the other so-called "big" announcers do. Why during a race does he have to say something like "as they race down the Fair Grounds backstretch", like people don't know which track they're watching???
I just wish these guys would watch videos of some of the old-timers and see what GOOD race calls were like, and copy them instead of trying to out-cute each other.

It's a shame that it's come to that. At a time when the industry should be doing things to attract new fans, I'm afraid they're not doing so and also alienating existing fans with these overly flourishing race calls. People want to watch races and know a little bit about where each horse is, not listen to the announcer performing a mini-series.
I can think of five or six announcers that would do a better job than Dooley is doing, and if they cajole Imbriale into becoming the permanent announcer, I'll either watch races with the sound off or go elsewhere to watch and bet.
Give me Keeneland up until about ten years ago - THAT is how to do it!

George - Yep! But almost anyone's better than Imbriale. I don't mind Dooley. He gets the call right.

When Arlington closes, Dooley will have an easy choice.

RACINGS MOTTO IS LETS PISS OFF 10 CONSISTENT PLAYERS AND FANS TO TRY TO GET ONE NEW ONE. I ONLY NEED TO SAY TWO WORDS TO VALIDATE MY POINT............. JOHNNY WEIR!!!

Maybe Johnny can learn to call races - at Del Mar! I can hear the call now: And a one and a to andtheuy're dancing away.........Ohhhhhhh no....... the tacky green and orange silks are in front. The pom pom cap is 2nd. (Feathers would be so more chic)..........The hottie with the great buns is last (yippee.......that gives us a better buns view). They will have to sprout flames........Speaking of flamees, did you see me on Letterman?.........

I don't think ol' Johnny would give a crap about women's (or filly's) buns.
Didn't see her on Letterman, but no big loss.
