It was a race worth watching and race worth saving but it was a race where dreams come true. He’s Watching, a $3,000 yearling purchase in the fall of 2012, captured the $776,000 Meadowlands Pace with a vicious closing kick while equaling the all-age world record of 1:46 4/5.
Driver Tim Tetrick captured his second straight Meadowlands Pace and gave the diminutive colt a flawless drive as the 2-1 second choice in the field of 10. Tetrick, leaving from post three, settled in fifth in the early stages but was on the move past the quarter waiting to flush the cover of the race favorite J K Endofanera.
In the early stages it was Luck Be Withyou and Lyonssomewhere pushing the pace hard through a :25 3/5 opening quarter with the latter and Yannick Gingras securing the front. The pace remained strong through a :53 2/5 opening half but by that point Tetrick had the cover he desired in the form of the favorite.
There was all sorts of traffic for the race winner as Sometimes Said had been pushed three wide and remained in the three path keeping He’s Watching in a spot where he couldn’t move.
On the final turn Gingras and Lyonssomewhere accelerated leaving the favorite in the lurch through a 1:20 3/5 three quarter clocking.
That opened the door for He’s Watching and the slick-gaited colt accelerated in a manner never seen before in this prestigious race. He’s Watching flew to the wire with Tetrick urging him home through a :26 1/5 final quarter with his final split a few ticks faster than that.
“I couldn’t ask for a better trip,” said Tetrick following the race.
“I did my job,” said winning trainer Dave Menary, “And Tim did his.”
Always B Miki rallied wide late to nail down the place spot with Tellitlikeitis third. Pacesetter Lyonssomewhere finished fourth with Jet Airway earning the final check.
For He’s Watching, owned by Menary Racing, Brad Grey, Michael Guerriero and Muscara Racing Trust, the victory was his third in six starts as a three-year-old after going undefeated in eight starts as a juvenile.
A son of American Ideal, the New York-bred eclipsed the former Meadowlands Pace record of Art Official taken in 2008 by a fifth of a second.
