I understand your point LT. The question is, what was the reason NYRA did a poor job on logistics, crowd control, etc? Why was this year any different?

Wiz by under control I mean there is a rapid response and the crowds in the affected area are dispersed with out any major disruptions to the parade or mass hysteria. It's dealt with quickly and professionally. The NYPD is prepared for incidents such as these when they happen at large events by having plans and personnel in place and most importantly learning from prior years incidents.

Monty first let me point out that as Alan stated getting out of Belmont on that day is always a disaster begging the question why doesn't someone come up with a better plan. As for others things that made that day worst it appears that NYRA oversold preferred parking leading patrons who paid for it to fend for themselves. According to folks I spoke with who were there one of the biggest problems was lack of security leading to reserved seating. In all the years I have attended you couldn't get to your seat until you produced your ticket and usually were led to your seat by 1 of the staff. If you left the area you had to reshow your ticket to get back in. Apparently this year there was not enough staff to deal with this and folks with general admission tickets were able to gain entrance to reserve seating thus causing problems when the rightful seat holder appeared. The LIRR situation seems to be another gross miscalculation by both the MTA and NYRA, plus a lack of staffing to control the crowd leaving the track, thus causing overcrowding and eventual closing of the station for safety reasons. Since I have never been on that station I can't venture an opinion as to whether is was in danger of collapse or not, but I do know buildings have collapsed, so it would not be a stretch to seeing the possibility of such an event. As far as running out of food that happens every year so not surprising it happened again. I hope that answers some of your questions. In my opinion all these problems are fixable with proper planning and a proper level of well trained personnel

So I guess NYS should build additional entrance ramps to the Cross Island Parkway from the Belmont Park parking lots and widen Hempstead Turnpike so that every three or four years, when there's a Triple Crown on the line, everyone can get out on time and get to their dinner plans that night.
As for the LIRR, they should hold up half-empty trains until enough laggards wander out of the track to the train so everyone can be accommodated.
There are ushers at the top of every aisle in the reserved seat sections (just like they are at Saratoga) to allow only ticket holders down each aisle. Maybe they should replace the ushers with Guardian Angels, or at least issue weapons to the ushers.
Other than "anecdotal evidence" with all the so-called news accounts that have been mentioned, there have been very few, if any, quantified issues that day - i.e., how many people snuck into the reserved seating areas, how many people were on the train station platforms, how many cars were stuck for "three hours" in the parking lots, how long were the lines in the ladies rooms, etc.?

Alan once again I ask you have you ever planned or were ever part of carrying out a plan to deal with large crowds at a major event. I have and I'm telling you you don't your ass from your elbow. First off people who where there have confirmed to me that security for reserve seating was indeed lacking. As for the LIRR holding trains that is exactly what is done at large events. Again I speak from 1st hand knowledge having done exactly that. Public safety trumps all. The trains there are put ins and not regular service trains subject to a schedule. Laggards what the hell didn't they have to shut it down due to the large crowd. Alan why don't you accept the fact that were enough reports to confirm what happen. Your beloved NYRA f---ed up big time. Kay and his clown board don't have a clue and should be put on notice that if there's a repeat of this fiasco they are gone.

from what I heard, it was a mess. friends paid for parking - had to argue to get ito the lot - no one checking reserved seats - and leaving? they just tailgated for hours rather than join the mess - said drivers were being nuts because they were so frustrated - Kay hasn't been very impressive but i don't think he was hired for racing - geo - selling to stronach was an option - hardly "imminent" and probably wouldn't have happened - eliot would have cleaned up the nyra without turning it into a complete joke, which it is now - andy's not the sharpest knife in the drawer - prolly the biggest phony ever and a real prick too - poor guy - he was more in his element marching in the gay parade! am betting part of the traffic problems were caused by clearing the way for his entourage to leave
