Not surprised. They were marginal before the casinos but now that they're diverting funds to other areas of the budget they're back in trouble.
Last Monday I was at Presque Isle Downs. Nice little racetrack but racing and casino-wise they're starting to hurt. Not many people betting on the horses (live or simulcast) and the casino was pretty empty. They originally were relying on business from Cleveland and Buffalo, but now that the casinos are operating in Thistledown and Northfield Park, they're in trouble. And when the new track/casino outside of Youngstown opens they'll probably just go under.
I don't think the harness tracks (The Meadows and Pocono Downs) are doing as badly, they operate at a much lower expense level.
Parx isn't as bad - the closest competition is Delaware Park and Atlantic City, but all three (including Parx) have been co-existing for decades.
It looks like a prediction I made 20 years ago is slowly coming true. There are just so many gambling dollars available out there, and as they get spread thin with the addition of more and more casinos, many of the smaller casinos will begin to fail.

GIVE A GOVERNOR THE VAST RESOURCES OF A THRIVING FUND AND HE WILL USE THE MONEY TO PATCH UP STATE NEEDS BECAUSE HIS IDEAS ARE HORRIBLE. MOST AMERICAN CITES FACE CRIPPLING ECONOMIC ISSUES. TEACHERS BEING LAID OFF, ROADS COLLAPSING, RESCUE BUDGETS BEING CUT. AND THOSE IN CHARGE ARE FRESH OUT OF IDEAS. SO CORBET HAS DONE WHAT MOST ARE DOING.TAKE THE FREE MONEY AND RAIDING IT.BECAUSE THEIR IDEAS TO CREATE REVENUE AND JOBS DON'T WORK.I HAVE BEEN BETWEEN ENGLAND AND IRELAND FOR THE PAST 3 WEEKS.NEVER ONCE HAVE I ENCOUNTERED A POT HOLE OR AN UNPAVED ROAD. NOT MANY IN THE STATE CAN MAKE THAT CLAIM.

are you planning on staying? I DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT QUESTION HAS TO DO WITH THIS TOPIC BUT SINCE INQUIRING MINDS WOULD LIKE TO KNOW. I DON'T HAVE TO STAY IN EUROPE OR THE UNITED STATES. I'M BLESSED TO BE IN A POSITION TO CHOSE AND GO WHEREVER I LIKE. VARIETY IS THE SPIC OF LIFE. |
