New Yorkers are happy LOL Shug/ Janney/Phipps Stable - doesn't get better than that! Orb thrust himself into the Kentucky Derby picture Saturday when overtaking odds-on Violence with a powerful surge to capture the 69th running of the Grade 2, $400,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla. With John Velazquez aboard for trainer Shug McGaughey, Orb prevailed by about a neck over Violence after finishing the 1 1/16-mile distance in 1:42.24 over a fast track. Speak Logistics was about seven lengths back in third, while Majestic Hussar, the pacesetter, finished fourth in a field of nine 3-year-olds. Sky Captain and Falling Sky were early scratches. Orb, making his stakes debut after back-to-back wins in maiden and allowance races, returned $12.80 to win as second choice. The $2 exacta (1-3) paid $26.40; the $1 trifecta (1-3-8) returned $72.90; and the 10-cent superfecta (1-3-8-4) was worth $23.31. The Malibu Moon colt was bred in Kentucky by his owners, Stuart Janney 3rd and the Phipps Stable. Orb earned 50 points in the new eligibility system being used by Churchill Downs for making the field for the May 4 Kentucky Derby. www.drf.com/news/gulfstream-park-orb-runs-down-violence-win-fountain-youthhoto: Coglianese Photos
