Great article.
www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/84186/breeding-for-the-classicsI find it sickening to see the decline of the American Thoroughbred. There are plenty of ways we could begin to re-introduce classic stamina back into our stock.
First, we need more distance races and more incentive (money) for greedy owners to run their top horses.
My suggestions:
Belmont Park should have it's own run of Triple Crown Series for males and females of all ages with emphasis on both speed and stamina.
3YO Males:
The Peter Pan run at a mile and 1/4.
The Belmont at a mile and 1/2.
The Dwyer at a mile and 5/8.
3YO Fillies:
Restore the Triple Tiara Series at Belmont Park.
The Acorn run at a flat mile.
The Mother Goose at a mile and 1/8.
The CCA Oaks back at it's classic mile and 1/2 distance.
Handicap Triple Crown for Older Males:
Met Mile
The Brooklyn - A mile and 1/8
Suburban - A mile and 1/4.
Handicap Triple Tiara for Older Females:
The Shuvee - One Mile
The Next Move - A mile and 1/8
The Ruffian - A mile and 1/4
Give out a $1 Million bonus for any horse who can successfully sweep a series.
The Woodward Stakes and Jockey Club Gold Cup should be run at a mile and 1/4 and a mile and 1/2 respectively.
More classic distance races for fillies and mares on dirt and turf:
The Kentucky Oaks, BC Distaff and Personal Ensign should all be run at a mile and 1/4 with the Beldame, Flower Bowl and BC Filly & Mare Turf a mile and 1/2.
Again, create the encentive (money) and they will come. This along with more imported blood from overseas and within the next 20 years, the American Throughbred will have regained it's stature in the world.
Oh well... a man can dream can't he?
