Post positions were drawn Wednesday for the $10 million Dubai World Cup, scheduled for Saturday at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai. The field includes former American-based Ron the Greek, who drew the far outside post 16 in the 1 1/4-mile event on Tapeta.
At 4 a.m. local time Wednesday with a light rain falling, Ron the Greek made his first appearance on the Meydan all-weather oval.
"He just had an easy gallop to get his feet underneath him," trainer Nicholas Bachalard said. "He looked good and handled the track well. More of the same tomorrow, maybe a little quicker down the lane."
A career earner of $2.7 million, the seven-year-old is a multiple Grade 1 winner on dirt, but only one of his 30 career races has come over an all-weather surface.
"He ran fourth in an allowance race at Keeneland, but the distance (1 1/16 miles) was too short and he's a better horse now that he was back then," trainer Nicholas Bachalard said. "The only way to find out (if he'll handle it) is to run on it."
"(Jose) Lezcano has his work cut out for him," said Bachalard in regards to the draw. "It's a long way around (from the outside). We'll look at it, talk about it and figure out a strategy."
The field also includes last year's Epsom Derby winner Ruler of the World, whom Al Shaqab Racing has purchased a significant interest in. The son of Galileo will run in the colors of Al Shaqab Racing in partnership with the Coolmore triumvirate of Tabor/Smith/Magnier. He will remain in training with Aidan O'Brien at Ballydoyle and will continue to be ridden by Joseph O'Brien.
